On this day in 1966, the Japanese government announced the construction of an airport on farmland in rural Sanrizuka, without permission of displaced locals. The struggle was led by the Sanrizuka-Shibayama United Opposition League against Construction of the Narita Airport, which locals formed under the leadership of opposition parties the Communist Party and Socialist Party. The struggle resulted in significant delays in the opening of the airport, as well as deaths on both sides.

At its height, the union mobilised 17,500 people for a general rally, while thousands of riot police were brought in on several occasions.

The area around Sanrizuka had been farmland since the Middle Ages, and, prior to the 1940s, much of the land had been privately owned by the Japanese Imperial Household.

Many locals were economically reliant on the Imperial estate at Goryō Farm, and local farmers had a strong economic and emotional attachment to the land. After Japan's defeat in World War II, large tracts of royal land were sold off and subsequently settled by poor rural laborers.

In the 1960s, the Japanese government planned to build a second airport in the Tokyo area to support Japan's rapid economic development. After meeting resistance from locals on the site's first chosen location, the rural town of Tomisato, the government was donated remaining land in Sanrizuka by the Imperial Family.

Locals in Sanrizuka were outraged when the government announced its plans. The Sanrizuka-Shibayama United Opposition League Against the Construction of Narita Airport (or Hantai Dōmei) was formed in 1966, and began to engage in a variety of tactics of resistance, including legal buy-ups, sit-ins, and occupations.

Meanwhile, the Japanese radical student movement was growing, and the League soon formed an alliance with active New Left groups; one major factor drawing the groups the together was that, under the US-Japan Security Treaty, the US military had free access to Japanese air facilities. As a result, it was likely the airport would be used for transporting troops and arms in the Vietnam War.

The demonstrators built huts and watchtowers along proposed construction sites. On October 10th, 1967, the government attempted to conduct a land survey, backed by over 2000 riot police. Clashes quickly broke out, and Hantai Domei leader Issaku Tomura was photographed being brutalized by police, further inflaming anti-airport sentiment.

Protests further grew and intensified over the next few years as the state pressed on with attempts to build the airport. Protestors would dig into the ground, build fortifications, and arm themselves against police. Construction was delayed by years, and the conflict would cost the government billions of yen.

On September 16th, 1971, three police officers were killed during an eminent domain expropriation. Four days later, police forcibly removed and destroyed the house of an elderly woman, an incident that became yet another symbol of state oppression to the opposition.

One student committed suicide, saying in his suicide note that "I detest those who brought the airport to this land". In 1972, the protestors built a 60 meter-high steel tower near the runway in order to disrupt flight tests. Conflict continued through much of the 1970s.

In 1977, the government announced plans to open the airport within the year. In May, police destroyed the tower while demonstrators attempted to cling on to it, provoking a new wave of widespread conflict. One protestor was killed after being struck in the head by a tear gas canister. In March 1978, the first runway was set to open, but a few days prior, a group of saboteurs burrowed into the main control tower, barricaded themselves inside, and proceeded to lay waste to the tower's equipment and infrastructure, delaying the opening yet again to May 20th, 1978.

Resistance continued after the airport was opened. Although many locals began to accept the airport and leave the land, the focus of Hantai Dōmei shifted to opposing plans for additional terminals and runways, as the airport's current size still only reflected a fraction of initial plans.

Clashes continued through the 1980s - on October 20th, 1985, members of the communist New Left group Chukaku-ha broke though police lines with logs and flagpoles, successfully attacking infrastructure in one of the last large-scale battles of the resistance campaign. Guerilla actions and bombings continued as late as the 1990s.

Although this campaign of resistance has largely shifted out of public attention in Japan, its presence is still felt: until 2015, all visitors were required to present ID cards for security reasons, and the airport still remains only a third of its initially-planned size. The Sanrizuka Struggle has never completely ended, and the Opposition League still exists and holds rallies.

Logged back onto my fb account after a few months of just being lazy and not resetting my password. And I honestly should have just stayed off. I used to use it to remind me of my friend's birthdays. Its not even useful for that anymore. But something I've been even more disappointed by is seeing some of the friends who had at least decent politics in the past posting increasingly cringy takes. One, who has worked in education, was complaining about how we need to keep standardized tests and the only reason anyone would be against it is because kids these days are just lazy. Another one, who used to post at least some decent succdem stuff simply spends all of his time on fb now complaining about "woke". And that's not even getting into all the AI BS that is starting to populate my feed.

I am half convinced I am arguing with a chat bot on facebook atm. AI generated or heavily filtered PFP, spouting patently false information that happens to show up as the AI generated answer on Quora (despite all the other quora humans saying the correct information) They claim to have 40 years of experience in the field but have only joined any of the FB groups associated in the last few months (and they joined them all in a short period of time) but then they argue like a redditor.

Can't decide how to spend the rest of my day off, if I should play Victoria 3 before the patch drops on Tuesday since I had a pretty cool playthrough going as the Sikh Empire (you can easily 1v1 China at 1836, so I took Tibet, Sichuan and Yunnan, then took Tonkin from Dai Viet for coastal access, rather than expanding into Afghanistan or Sindh), or if I should play stellaris instead.

If I don't go back to Victoria before Tuesday I'm probably just gonna end up deleting all my old pre patch saves

i should really start my drinking break tonight (June has been quite the month in this regard) but my last few days at this job have me feeling tense and its friday and its disgustingly hot so i deserve a treat. ive tried finding a replacement vice but junk food sucks major ass, weed sorta sucks (not really but its just too volatile on my neurotic brain as a go-to), cranking my hog is too fleeting (srry TMI), seltzer works as a placebo sometimes but is not a vice at all, vidya games are hit or miss. anything harder is worse for me and too expensive and carries fent risk. why does life fuckin suck why did god make my brain love drinking so much??

maybe Friday night during a heatwave is overly ambitious and i should just start tomorrow.......

Caught a clip of the chudspace via a armchairing commentator on my landlord's speaker phone. He seemed to be building to the point that we shouldn't slaughter any farm animals to contain the bird flu. He didn't mention the mortality rate, if he even knew it, but said that like covid, 'the immunocompromised and the feeble' would be the ones who die from it, and that makes it a 'demographic issue'.

Despite him repeatedly screaming "WE LIVE IN NORTH KOREA" to talk about coaching he doesn't like, I really like Awful Coaching. Feels like old school internet to have a guy on youtube who's just an honest psycho about his passion. He doesn't even monetize his channel.

So I've been working out and it's great. I have a little problem though that I am working out next to some fucking Olympian-ass women. I am trying very hard not to look at them in a disrespectful way, but like, the other day this woman was working out her back next to me and I just - it was incredible. She has the best back I've ever seen in person, like 2% body fat and absolutely fucking sculpted lats. Is it okay for me to look at that shit and be like "oh wow you are so strong and I hope I can get that someday?" Obviously not saying that out loud. But like when I see women just knocking out several hundred pound lifts I just have trouble not being overwhelmed and watching.

might give fear and hunger another go on normal difficulty this time. the vibes and world were immaculate but the gameplay was just too frustrating, i get that the brutal unforgiving nature is designed to reinforce the themes but shit like torch management simply got too tedious for me especially as someone with a poor sense of direction prone to getting lost in games

Great megathread topic! I actually did some posting about this issue myself, specifically on how Narita Airport has never been fully completed. My favorite outcome of this is Japan's noisiest shrine.

Yay it’s ~~founders~~ depression day. I love remembering my failures, this day rules,

I hate that Vewn's animations are popular now. But Wait, it's not a ridiculous contrarian thing, promise.

I think I first watched Cat City like five years ago now, and really Vewn videos fell out of the coconut tree, to me. They do not exist in the context of anything that came before them. There are some obvious infkuences, sure - cartoon network shows, overwhelming existential dread, ambient homosexuality - but while I can divine a normal amount of narrative information and theme from them, I cannot possibly conjure a vision of what influences and mind state brought them to fruition. Weirdly I found I was kinda happy with that.

As the Vewn following grows, complete with atrocious video essays offering gradeschool interpretations of each animation, it becomes time to TEST MY UNDERSTANDING against everybody else's. I like a lil comprehension sometimes, as a treat; it's rewarding to suss out when a thing has the DNA of another thing in it, and seeing the throughlines in, Idk, Quest Corporation's games is fun. With something as weird and vague as a Vewn though, it turns into a stressful battle to try to understand the fuckers, it's like [series of horrific inexplicably strange books you've never heard of] in that tracing the roots and actually having a full grasp on the thing becomes a difficulty to overcome. I kind of miss when these were just some cool and kinda eepy videos I found on sloptube, instead of a fuckin comprehension challenge.

Is this hopelessly neurotic? (yes) Does this say way more about me than any Vewn video? (you are reading my horrible blog-tier bullshit)
