Boomer alert -

The kids nowadays are young enough to have not grown up with optical media, so you hear a lot about "movie CDs are rotting!!!!" in sloptube comments or whatever. I pretty much took this as a falsehood; burned CD-R/RW discs and DVD + and - R/RW discs do often quit, 'cause of the way the laser has to burn the pits and lands into the dye of the disc or whatever. But pressed discs? Maybe Laserdiscs, but I have CDs from like 1986 that are still in perfect playing shape. A copy of "Decade" with literal holes in the plastic player that still plays and rips perfectly.

Recently though I actually found a disc that might be "rotting", which is a 1997 (or whatever) DVD copy of Interview With The Vampire. The problematic vampire yaoi made me fight to watch it, because the disc doesn't really have any scratches, but the data layer at the outer edge of the disc (where the layer change happens) has little nicks and chunks missing, even though the plastic surrounding it is fine. So my Sony 4K player freaks out when it hits the halfway mark, and skips like five minutes because the data is actually missing. PC drives don't do much better, so like... wow, I wonder if this is a manufacturing defect or genuine rot? Wild though, first pressed disc I've ever bought that had non-scratch issues...

This post was inspired partly by @khizuo@hexbear.net , thank u.

I had her famous-unfinished novel-manuscript Otros Valles on my to-read list since I knew it was a thing, (maybe five years ago) but only when I went to look for it did I realise the author had deliberately wiped her presence from everywhere, basically.

Back then I could only find a couple of her essays knocking around pirate sites, nothing more. Coincidentally they are here and here, with Mutual Aid Printing not being listed on her Goodreads page or anything like that.

I guess the question I have is whether or not making a post like this is a bad thing to do? If you read Mutual Aid Printing, the author's intent of wiping herself from the general record as a sort of form of protest is very clear. So I've never really known how cool or uncool it is to even talk about her work. Should I literally not read her stuff, or is the broad statement more the point, and whatever you find is whatever you find? I guess it's kind of semantics, but there's a twinge in my brain that says yapping loudly about Berrout's work may be a foot-in-mouth move.

The other thing, which Berrout also discusses in both linked essays, is that the writers' communities/interlinked social webs/who fucking knows, queer artist's collectives she ran in were often obnoxiously white. I think Ryka Aoki is the only published transfem poc I can think of? Binnie, Peters, Felker-Martin, so on... Please inform me if I've missed anything, I'm not a full historian, simply a dumbass.

So aside from the fact that Berrout represents a rare voice in the space, I like how Otros Valles contrasts and almost critiques Nevada. It has none of the dejected, self-deprecating artifice. I dunno if I'm fit to talk about it but it keeps biting at my mind, and I'm not really sure if I should yap. Thoughts? Opinions? Criticisms? Call me cringe? ✨

Critical support to the bird!

Look right, I can remember retro g*mers making jokes about the Game Gear being 2big and 2heavy back in the day, probably in the 2000s. Classic Game Room watchers remember. Same for the Lynx. The Wii U's tea tray controller was derided for being beeeeg. I can also recall people saying that the PS Vita was kinda large back when it came out, which tbf it is pushing the definition of "pocketable" for the boys and takes up a lot of purse space.

It sort of felt like reality broke down in 2017. The first thing I did when the Switch was announced was make a joke about putting a Game Gear in your pocket, but suddenly nobody else gave a damn that the Switch is like ten inches long. Most dildos are not that long.... makima-huh I get that it's a hybrid, but suddenly the dynamic shifted from "if it can't fit my dude pockets it's no good!" to "aw yeah bruh just get a hardcase and throw it in a backpack!" I do support backpack gang, but you almost may as well get a laptop at that point.

Handheld size has become progressively more comical over the years though, with my favourite example being the Steam Deck which is actually considerably longer than a Wii U Gamepad at an XL 13" panting Tell ya what, I couldn't fit that!!

I'm not really against the existence of larger handhelds on its own, I have long fingers and a DS Lite or PS Vita will give me handcramps sometimes. But it's like a weirder version of when all phones became "phablets" and impossible to use with one hand, suddenly all handhelds are as big as the Wii U pad. (Switch Lite excluded, though it's still larger than a Vita) It also seems like the PS Vita and 3DS primed everyone to accept hilariously short battery life? The PSP 3000/Go and DS Lite/DSi could get anywhere from 8 to 20 hours depending on your settings, that was awesome. The 3DS and Vita won't hold out for more than three hours under duress, though. Most modern portable PCs have worse battery than that, even...

I guess I'm just wondering wha happun??? I know there's a large contingent of people who never take handhelds outside the house anyway (based) and just use them on the couch, but I don't think the Deck would be much more pleasant to handle in an armchair or whatever. That's one thicc-ass boi.

I forget which of you it was that initially left Owl Criticism on here, recommended it to me. I owe you my life, LOOK at the brilliance of this critical owl.

Finding out that Nabokov is some kulak fucker that fled the October Revolution and was just really into the narrative concept of little girls, was... agni-pain

Been watching this funny video from one of the channels people gave me on my sloptube post, and I kinda like the way she talks about past experiences and stuff, feels very healthy. Idk who needs to hear this but maybe somebody??

Y'all remember when Youtube was a place full of dorky home movies and machinima stuff??

I really kinda miss things like this on sloptube. Good channel btw niko-spin

this and more vicious self-owns, only in this incredible grass-toucher post (again)

I used to have irl friends but they all turned out to be horrible people or libs or whatever, I used to have leddit but leddit is fucking poisonous, I used to have discord servers and shit but I tend to pass into and out of discord groups with worrying ease, also I cant stop saying "another kkkracka down" at grampa's funeral

now I have bear website and it's the place I want to talk, what the fuck else even is there? where else would even tolerate me? any attempt to reach out and join communities or groups anywhere would probably result in critical psychic damage, also I still will not go into the queer center in town, what the fuck

bear website is the only spot where talking to people has a decent chance of not being a painful affair

I have such a brainbug, I'm fond of the vocals and also album is big noisy. I'm a fan of Black Dresses and Weatherday in my spare time. My mind has been caught on Wallsocket though cowboy-cri and I need more than one album to listen to...

Bonus points if the author first mentions a specific trait, physical build, or whatever else halfway through the novel and totally fucks up my mental image.

I don't expect a biology model description for each character, but write me something brief and evocative of how they should look, you fucking dork author. I don't even know how tall she should be, her hair colour, anything. Why are you like this, author?

jesse-wtf wtf is this tagline, speak sense you absolute buffoon of a bear website

we have some banger taglines ("Get under my desk and find it themby" makes me snort everytime) and then we have inscrutable shit like this
