Greenland’s elected leader said the gigantic Arctic island is not for sale after Donald Trump once again raised the issue of “ownership and control” of the vast territory that has been part of Denmark for more than 600 years.

“Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom,” Greenland’s prime minister, Múte Egede, said in a written comment.

The US president-elect on Sunday announced that he had picked Ken Howery, a former envoy to Sweden, as his ambassador to Copenhagen, and commented on the status of Greenland, a semi-autonomous part of Denmark.

“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

It's all fun and games and a big joke until militaries start occupying sovereign states after being ordered by some delusional leaders that think they can do whatever they want because they surround themselves with people who won't question a damned thing.

Part of the problem is people like Turnip being in power .... the other half of the problem is everyone either standing around supporting him or doing absolutely nothing to stop or question him.

[–] solsangraal@lemmy.zip 42 points 6 months ago (3 children)

or doing absolutely nothing to stop or question him.

this is what i just can't wrap my head around... they've had four years to do something about this fucking thing, instead of the absolutely fucking nothing they've been doing the whole time

It's really starting to sound less like "America first" and more like "America only." Pissing off the rest of the world isn't a very good business strategy coming from a guy that's supposedly good at business.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 28 points 6 months ago

He's never been good at business. He inherited his wealth and bankrupted multiple businesses.

[–] spamfajitas@lemmy.world 15 points 6 months ago

I think he'd probably prefer the phrase "Amerika über alles" instead, based on his reading preferences.

Always has been.

Trump has NEVER been good at business. He is just very good at bullying contractors and not paying what he agreed to pay.

His modus operandi is “Don’t pay anyone until they take you to court and then offer them half of what they want for the work they have already done”

[–] IphtashuFitz@lemmy.world 38 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Trump going to emulate big daddy Putler and embark on a 3 day special operation after he’s back in the White House?

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 17 points 6 months ago

You gotta wonder how many of the orange asshole's enemies will soon start having problems with windows and poisonings.

[–] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 36 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Greenland, Canada, and the Panama Canal.

America is clearly hot garbage and nobody wants in on the fire.

[–] SpikesOtherDog@ani.social 14 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Pretty sure he's also threatened Mexico.

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago

I think that was just invading and not occupying. Though history would indicate that Americans aren't capable of one without the other.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 4 points 6 months ago

Half of us don't even want in on it. But here we are.

[–] qyron@sopuli.xyz 21 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Now that I managed to hold down the laughs, can someone be so kind in explaining the obcession with Greenland from Orange Man?

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 29 points 6 months ago (3 children)
  • The strategic location of the politically Danish island, in addition to being a gateway to the Arctic, is extremely important for US security.
  • Greenland’s natural resources have been the target of interest from foreign companies and global powers.
  • Due to its importance, any change in foreign control or influence over Greenland can have implications for Denmark and for NATO.

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 21 points 6 months ago (2 children)

What’s crazy is the US doesn’t need to own it since it’s Danish and therefore part of NATO. He’s such a dipshit, it’s exhausting

[–] shonn@lemmy.world 22 points 6 months ago

His (Putin's) plan is to break up NATO.

[–] Vikthor@lemmy.world 11 points 6 months ago

Well, if you remember one of his ideas was leaving NATO, so he is an idiot, but at least in this one thing he is consistent.

[–] ChonkyOwlbear@lemmy.world 10 points 6 months ago

I'm betting he wants it because it looks big on a map and he doesn't think anyone lives there.

[–] qyron@sopuli.xyz 5 points 6 months ago

So he is only half stupid but still dumb as a brick for spewing out these things.

[–] logos@sh.itjust.works 19 points 6 months ago (1 children)

For purposes of justice and lolz throughout the world, the People feel that ownership and control of Mar-a-Lago is an absolute necessity.

More that Greenland is a huge track of land that will likely be free of ice in the next decade, and is entirely untapped for minerals as well as oil and gas.

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 9 points 6 months ago (1 children)

If we don't stop extracting and burning oil and gas, we're screwed as a species. But, let's face it, we've stuck our heads in the sand, and decided to call climate change fake so boomers could make a few extra bucks before they kick the bucket.

[–] justOnePersistentKbinPlease@fedia.io -1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Yes, it might also already be too late to revert the damage done. So the morons are going to go out as rich as possible

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

It's not too late. Pretty much all climate scientists will tell you that we can limit the damage. This is propaganda spread by oil companies, and it's been rather effective. They're no longer denying climate change, shifting the messaging to, well, either it isn't human driven, or it's too late to do anything different.

Sure we can probably reverse the changes to the climate.

Thats not going to bring back the bees and bugs, birds, bats and frogs lost to Glysophosate pesticides.

Its not going to restore the millions of square kilometers of dead pine forest in BC thanks to warmer winters screwing up the pine beetle ecosystem.

Likewise, the billions of dead snow crabs are gone. They're not coming back, as are all of the dead seabirds and wildlife that needed them.

Even if we find a magic cure to the climate, the ecosystem we need is actively dying, and its a gamble if we can fix the climate and fix that before we are all fucked.

Huuuuge... tracts of land?

[–] logos@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 months ago

What.. the curtains?

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 14 points 6 months ago

I don't believe he mentioned buying it...

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 14 points 6 months ago

I'm fairly certain Conan bought it back in 2019 after Trump inquired last time.

[–] sith@lemmy.zip 8 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

This kind of talk is effective if you want to push EU towards China. Don't really understand the tactics here. Trump in a nutshell I guess.

If he's really interested in Greenland he should try to create more division between Greenland and Denmark. Maybe that's what we'll see next.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago

I have created a graphic which you are all free to use when this sort of thing needs to be explained.

[–] robocall@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago

Trump knows Greenland is not for sale. This is a distraction from substantial criticism of him.

We're letting our favorite child Israel and our new step daddy Russia do it; why should we have to lose out?

Now, pardon me while I go repeatedly slam my head against a brick wall until I've decided it's time to cry, instead.

[–] cyd@lemmy.world -4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Alright, since Trump is so keen on territory expansion, let's make Western Ukraine the 51st US state. Eastern half goes to Russia. There will be plenty of living room for everyone.
