More rugged, and compact, but still great for hooking up to a TV or headset.

I would absolutely buy this if it had BIOS access. I have zero interest in handhelds, but Ive played the hell out of my docked Switch, and a cheaper dock only Deck would be perfect.

Yeah, I either play handheld or on a TV, so dedicated pc in that form factor/price seems appealing. Maybe we'll see something like that in the next steamdeck iteration, kinda like the vita TV (or whatever it was called).

Major issue is upgradeability. The handheld/laptop form factors haven't ever been too great for upgrading.

You can download steamOS and put it on any hardware you want (assuming it's supported by Linux)... I wouldn't hold your breath for an upgradable machine in that form factor, but if you can live with something a little bigger you could build a minipc with steamOS.

If I recall correctly that's the old version of steam OS. The new one runs on modified Arch (maybe?) and hasn't been released for general use yet, otherwise I think you'd have seen other handheld using it already.

You're right, that's my bad. Looks like there's an unofficial port that you can use on custom hardware, but nothing from valve yet.

Yeah, I'm really interested if we'll ever get a public release. I don't know enough about their customization to create SteamOS, but assume driver support could be a big problem.

PC gaming on my tv has made me never want a tower or computer desk again. It's great.

Slap a "Powered by Steam Machines ™️®️©️" sticker on the side of it and I think I know how Valve can make their next billion. Bonus, all the "Verified on Deck" stuff carries right over.
