A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Morocco on September 8th, with the epicenter 73 kilometers away from Marrakesh.

At least 2500 people have died as of September 11th, most outside Marrakesh, with more people being pulled out of the rubble every day, making it the deadliest earthquake in Morocco since 1960, and the second-deadliest earthquake this year (first being, of course, the one in Turkiye-Syria in February, which killed nearly 60,000 people). While the deaths are the most horrific part, damage to historic sites has also been very significant - including buildings dating back to the 1000s.

Morocco is situated close to the Eurasian-African plate boundary, where the two plates are colliding. The rock comprising the Atlas Mountains, situated along the northwestern coast of Africa separating the Sahara from the Mediterranean Sea, are being pushed together at a rate of 1 millimeter per year, and thus the mountains are slowly growing. As they collide, energy is stored up over time and then released, and faults develop. The earthquake this month originated on one such fault, as did the earthquake in 1960. The earthquake hypocenter was 20-25 kilometers underground, with 1.7 meters (or 5 and a half feet) of rock suddenly shifting along a fault ~30 kilometers (19 miles) long.

Earthquake prediction is still deeply imprecise at best, and obtaining decent knowledge and forewarning of earthquakes is highly dependent on dense seismometer arrays that constantly monitor seismic activity, such as in Japan, and detailed understanding of the local and regional tectonic environment. The best way to prevent damage is to build earthquake-resistant infrastructure and establish routines for escaping buildings and reaching safety. All of these, of course, are underdeveloped to nonexistent in developing countries, particularly in poorer communities inside those countries.

The Country of the Week, in honour of Allende's death 50 years ago (the only bad geopolitical event that has occurred on September 11th, of course), is Chile. Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Almost every Western media outlet.

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

The lib consensus seems to be that Putin is hoping Trump wins the 2024 election and pulls the rug, forcing Ukraine to accept defeat. I can't help but wonder if Putin is planning almost the opposite. Steamroll Ukraine in 2024, before the US election, shocking the West. Trump can then use that complete failure as ammunition to secure victory. Frankly, I think a second Trump presidency is already pretty likely, and that little nudge might push it into "sure thing" territory.

[–] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 42 points 2 years ago (5 children)

I think the problem with this line of thinking is that Putin can just "plan" to steamroll Ukraine in 2024, and that the only thing preventing Russia from already doing so is Putin's "plan." If Russia could steamroll Ukraine they would've done so already; geopolitics does not revolve around US election cycles. The war in Ukraine may end in 2024, maybe Ukraine's military will collapse thanks to all the pressure on it and their dwindling supplies, but it won't go according to anybody's "plan," as it's not up to Putin to decide when the war ends in a Russian victory outside of committing far more troops than they already have, which I don't see on the horizon given their current strategy seems to be working, albeit very slowly.

I agree that Trump's victory seems likely though, and if the situation in Ukraine wraps up in 2024 it's almost a sure thing.

AMLO dropping a "reacting to" video.

AMLO plays a video of Milei talking about the Pope. The man absolutely hates the Pope because he has a Peronist-ish background and once spoke about Social Justice and was once related to a few argentine communists back in the day. So he begins to yell saying that the devil took the "House of God" and that he "Pushes for communism" (Imagine the Pope being this based). AMLO's reaction is priceless. Libertarian by the way, and super pro-church. Go figure.

May God have pity on our people, because these people wont.

This meeting between Russia and DPRK must be significant. I can't remember ever seeing Kim Jong-un leave DPRK before. Yet another example of western blowback? I always assumed Russia gave DPRK nuke tech but maybe not since 1990's. A recent photo of Kim Jong-un and his daughter at a mobile rocket launch showed a big wet spot (water condensation) around the launcher which suggests they still using liquid fuel. Solid fuel would be a big improvement as you wouldn't need liquid oxygen trucks following the mobile launchers around. I don't know much about rocket science so I'm wondering if solid fuel would improve range of ICBM's also? Not to mention improvements in yield and shaping of the detonation of nukes and other related bomb tech that Russia is known for. China just announced a high level delegation traveling to DPRK in the near future so things are starting to pop off in that region of the world.

Exciting news for fans of escalation. Ukraine has hit two Russian ships in drydock in Sevastopol with British Stormshadow missiles. Nato recently kicked off it's latest round of naval exercises with the 6th fleet in the black sea. It's quite possible that Ukraine used those naval exercises as cover to attack Sevastopol.

[–] ProxyTheAwesome@hexbear.net 40 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I expect Russia to shake its fist angrily and then continue doing exactly what it was doing before

[–] MoreAmphibians@hexbear.net 41 points 2 years ago (6 children)

Very likely, Russia tends to ignore the crossing of its redlines for a long time until suddenly taking extreme measures. That's what we saw with the invasion of Ukraine.

But Cook avoided speaking an uncomfortable truth: The Arizona factory—which has been a focal point of the Biden plan and will cost $40 billion to build—will do little to make the U.S. self-reliant in chips. That’s because many advanced chips made in Arizona for Apple or other customers such as Nvidia, AMD and Tesla will still require assembly in Taiwan in a process known as packaging, according to interviews with multiple TSMC engineers and former Apple employees.

Anyone have full access to this article?

[–] SeventyTwoTrillion@hexbear.net 44 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Huh, that's a strangely impenetrable paywall.

I've (sorta) found a way around it though - this article, which talks about the overall issue with some authority even if they don't quote more from the article than is available in what's available already.

The TSMC Arizona chip plant is behind schedule, over budget, and the subject of contention in online forums – and now an analyst says that it will be little more than a useless paperweight, even when it does finally begin production. Not only will it only make chips for older Apple devices, but it can’t even complete the process of making those without sending them back to Taiwan for final assembly.

This whole thing was supposed to be a win-win. The US CHIPS Act successfully persuades TSMC to build a chipmaking plant in Arizona, and it makes chips for Apple devices (albeit only older ones). TSMC gets a chunk of cash to subsidize a new plant; Apple gets positive press for buying US-made chips; and jobs are created for US workers.

None of which is going well. TSMC wants bigger subsidies and fewer rules. The project is behind schedule, and over budget, with production already pushed into 2025, from 2024. There is talk of US-made chips costing more than those made in Taiwan, which would mean Apple would likely buy only a token number of them.

US job creation has been brought into question as TSMC wants to bring in around 500 Taiwanese workers to speed up construction work. American unions are naturally unhappy about this, and are petitioning for Taiwanese worker visas to be denied. Finally, the whole controversy now appears to be creating bad blood between American and Taiwanese citizens.

A new report in The Information says while Apple chips may be made in the US, they will still need to be sent back to Taiwan before they get anywhere near an Apple device.

The Arizona factory—which has been a focal point of the Biden plan and will cost $40 billion to build—will do little to make the U.S. self-reliant in chips. That’s because many advanced chips made in Arizona for Apple or other customers such as Nvidia, AMD and Tesla will still require assembly in Taiwan in a process known as packaging, according to interviews with multiple TSMC engineers and former Apple employees.

Packaging is the name given to the process of placing the various circuit boards as close together as possible before encapsulating them into a single chip. For example, in the iPhone, the memory is placed directly on top of the processor to improve performance and reliability. Packaging is a highly advanced process, where TSMC has a massive lead over its competitors, but the process can only be done in the sophisticated facilities which only exist in Taiwan.

An analyst at one chip research firm says that basically makes the US plant a paperweight – a completely useless facility when it comes to reducing American dependence on Taiwan.

“The TSMC Arizona fab is effectively a paperweight in any geopolitical tension or war [with China over Taiwan] due to the fact that it still requires sending the chips back to Taiwan for packaging,” said Dylan Patel, chief analyst at SemiAnalysis, a semiconductor research firm.

Given that TSMC has been struggling even to build a chip fab for older tech, there seems no prospect that it would ever attempt to set up chip packaging facilities in the US.

“Building this type of facility is a huge expenditure of [capital], time, and effort, and it does not seem likely that TSMC will want to do this anytime soon in the desert in Arizona, particularly given all the problems the firm has encountered with construction, costs and personnel so far,” said Paul Triolo, senior vice president for China at consultancy DGA-Albright Stonebridge Group.

from Rybar:

Another great news from the world of OSINT: another batch of secret files has been posted on the forum of the Russian game War Thunder . This time, documentation for the American F-117 bomber appeared there with all the characteristics and descriptions of the systems. The funny thing is that this is already the 11th (eleventh) such leak in the War Thunder community over the past few years. Similarly, the following became available to the general public:

Complete documentation on the European fighter Eurofighter Typhoon DA7, 730 pages long.

▪️A manual for the Chinese Shenyang J-8B fighter and a document for the on-board complex of the MiG-29 fighter.

▪️Part of the gunner's technical manual for the French Leclerc tank and excerpts from the operation and maintenance manual for the British Challenger tank.

▪️Drawings and technical characteristics of the Chinese 125-mm armor-piercing sabot projectile DTC10-125.

▪️Description of systems and weapons of American multirole fighters F-15E and F-16.

gamers ftw

Fun fact about Kim Jong-un

Kim Jong-un's thesis was entitled "Computer modeling to refine tactical maps using a global navigation system (GPS)."

Kim Jong Il is believed to have approved of this technical treatise, noting that it reflected the "grand strategic theories" created by his father Kim Il Sung.

Libya floods: Level of destruction “never seen before”, death toll reaches 11,300

Untold numbers are buried under mud and debris that includes overturned cars and chunks of concrete. The collapse of two dams in the aftermath of torrential rain caused the most destruction. The Permanent Representative of Libya to the United Nations, referred to the catastrophe as “something never seen in Libya before."

"[...] the numbers are changing as we speak. I mean, the numbers are thousands", Taher El-Sonni said on Thursday morning. "[...] The direct hit came to an area where it's around 30,000. And as we speak now, many of those are either being in a rescue effort or missing because they were hit badly when that happens. So I cannot really confirm the final numbers, but it`s really a high level of magnitude. And I'm afraid we will hear really large numbers, maybe even more than what has been confirmed so far."

Surovikin is in Algeria?

It is not known what the purpose of his visit to Algeria is. However, in at least one grainy photo, he can be seen giving a talk to an auditorium that seemingly looks official, with Algerian flags in the background and the room packed with dozens of people.

In a more official photo, Surovikin can be seen at the Abdelhamid Ben Badis Mosque in the port city of Oran, in western Algeria. The images depict Surovikin, sporting stubble and a beige jumpsuit, being shown around the mosque and presented with a Quran.

I'm very confused by what Surovikin is doing nowadays. He was fired as airforce commander, sure, but what is his role now? Who's now in control of the Ukraine conflict on the Russian side?

Pro-Kremlin populist tipped to win Slovak elections

Slovakia, a Central European country of 5.4 million people, was the first NATO nation to deliver fighter jets to Ukraine. But opinion surveys indicate the 30 September snap ballot will be won by Smer-SD, whose leader Robert Fico has made comments in line with Kremlin rhetoric.

“The war in Ukraine originated in 2014 when Ukrainian fascists were killing civilian victims of Russian nationality,” he alleged in a video, repeating inaccurate and unproven Russian claims. Fico has also pledged to “immediately stop all deliveries of military aid to Ukraine”, opposes Ukraine’s bid to join NATO and has condemned EU sanctions against Russia.

Isn't that a basic fact about reality? What is the Odessa trade union building fire if it isn't that? Were they have a barbeque in there that went wrong?

Why does Kim Jong-un travel across Russia by special train and not by plane?

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 42 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Has to be a security thing? Perhaps this is a thing where they think US sleepers or Ukrainians might be in Russia that could see it as a target with enough value to go for.

EDIT: Actually he didn't fly when he went to Vietnam either. Maybe he doesn't like planes?

COTW: Just saw the Chilean movie Los Colonos (The Settlers) last night. It was really good if disturbing western about the Selk'nam genocide in Tierra del Fuego during the settlement of Patagonia. If you're a fan of old westerns like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly I would definitely recommend the movie it has beautiful cinematography and soundtrack and really feels like it was made in a classic Revisionist Western style. I will give a CW that the movie is far more brutal than I expected it to be going in, so CW for SV/SA, depictions of genocide, child abuse/murder, and racism.

The movie really depicted how the genocide in Tierra del Fuego was carried out directly by capitalist interests like Jose Menendez in order to clear the land for agriculture and development. In a way that I think could be expanded to analyze the United States western frontier. The genocide of the Selk'nam people resulted in the population of the people declining from about 4000 in the mid 1800s to just 100 in the early 1900s. It also has a really interesting analysis of how different national attitudes affected colonization in the Americas. The main characters are a Mestizo worker, a British veteran of the Boer war, and an American settler from Texas, these three are tasked with carrying out part of the genocide. I think the attitudes of these different characters is meant as a representation of their "national character", the British character being pompous and detached in his brutality, the American being paranoid and violent in his fear of the ever expanding frontier, and later we see the idea of a "post-colonial" nationalist who wants to forget the horrors of colonization in order to build a nation. Definitely recommend the movie.
