Some of them even thought we went too far. The only reason we aren't horrified by our US history of slavery and genocide is that it remains the status quo.

yes, the liberal pearl-clutching is facilitated by ignorance, but it's not exactly pragmatic in this moment as the U.S. is turning autocratic to side with the fascists in claiming America ...

Some people might use it as a statement of intent: "I will not let this be American". I think it's fine to look at an idealized US and say the US should be that.
