Comic Books

A place to discuss comic books of all types, from old to new, Big 2 to indie, and everything in between.

Floppies, graphic novels, compilations, omnibusses (omnibusi?) are all fair game.

There is only one rule:*

Comic Books is a no judgement zone.

You can talk all you want about how Rob Liefeld is trash, Bob Kane is an asshole, or Frank Miller and Dave Sim’s politics have made them toxic, that’s all good.

If, however, another user is LEGITIMATELY a fan of something you don’t like, that does NOT make them a lesser person. Attack the art for being bad, not the person for being a fan of bad art.

* I lied. There are TWO rules... No piracy. Cover shots? That's good. Interior pages, in moderation? Sure. Full books? Links to pirate sites? That's how we get things shut down. :(

I'm not saying it's been a problem, because it hasn't been.

The independent scene has gotten stronger lately, but it's still a shadow of what it was back in the 80s. In fact, you could argue that Image is no longer technically indie, they're right up there with Marvel and D.C.

But back in the 80s we had Eclipse, Pacific, First, Comico, Eagle, this was before even Dark Horse and Valiant came along.

I think the old independet comics scene was just different, not better or worse. It'd be great to see more 80s style indie comics made again, but I wouldn't want them to replace what we have now.

Relevant video about the history of Elfquest, which was one of first underground/self published comics to "get big"

I'll check it out. I still need to read Elfquest.

Closest we've got now, I think, are the Ghost Machine books from Image. Those have been a great read so far.

Oh yeah, the Geoff Johns stuff. I didn't know Halo and Hornsby was by them too. I didn't read any of their books yet (I usually wait until a series is done or has a large enough backlog) though they didn't give me 80s indie comic vibes when I saw them.

Mostly Geiger, Rook and Redcoat giving me that vibe.

This article isn’t really so much pro indie as it is anti Marvel and DC superheroes. A bunch of the books mentioned are Image or Dark Horse, who I wouldn’t call indies these days. Image is still creator owned (which is a good thing) and Dark Horse has been part of Embracer for awhile (which is not great). I’m genuinely surprised an article about indies doesn’t mention Bone too; that is the poster child for amazing work.

Saga is so fucking good. I’m really mad that I got caught up in a week

Which is the first one in the preview pic?

The best comic in print.

So, I only know about Invincible because of the Prime Vídeo TV Show, which of these new comics would you recommend me?

Thing is, there's a wealth of comics outside the Big Two these days. What genres do you like?

Sci-fi: Saga

Horror: Something is Killing the Children

[–] kratoz29@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I pretty much like all the genres, maybe I am not the best horror watcher, although the 2nd comic looks interesting, I am gonna check out both 👍🏻

They are both top notch and shouldn't disappoint.

If you fancy some crime then Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips are knocking it out of the park - have a look at the synopsis for Criminal or Reckless or Kill or Be Killed and see if any of that grabs you.
