Pains me to hear it called a failure, it's such a delightful game. While the Western release years after was not part of initial development, it's also a landmark game in English localization history. The script brilliantly handles the puns and other specific quirks of the original Japanese while also setting a standard tone for this series and similar games that followed. For example, I don't know if Kansai-ben was translated into a US Southern dialect in a video game before this one.

Not a video game, but Osaka in Azumanga Daioh (2002) immediately comes to mind as a prior example of Kansai-ben->Southern localization.
They weren't nearly so patient with Okami around that time. They barely communicated around it, killed the studio, then commissioned a port they...barely communicated around again, and then they complained the game was doomed to be a commercial failure because... I don't know.
It's basically like one of the better classic Legend of Zelda games, only with a unique universe and charm and about twice the size of those.
It was criminally overlooked on PS2, but they have zero excuse for not turning it into a major hit for the Wii. One of the best game on a console with an absurd install base and that had almost no competition for it at that point.
If anyone is done with the official series and wants some more, some indie games that nicely follow its success:
Gyakuten Live, a fan game based on Love Live School Idol - three cases in, generally based around lower-stakes crimes but with surprising escalation
Occult Crime Police, a series based on small town paranormality
Tyrion Cuthbert: Attorney of the Arcane, takes place in a world of magic where rules of spells are often a form of evidence.
Your post is so criminal without links:
I don't want to came off as simping for Capcom because they're are a corporation and thus are only profit-driven. But I do want to give credit where credit is due. Greenlighting a sequel despite the first attempt being a flop is not something that many publishers would do. This wouldn't be the last of Capcom's unorthodox decisions. When the industry was laying off workers left and right, Capcom actually increased their employees pay. If that increase was actually a substantial increase or not I don't know but other companies won't even consider increasing employee pay by a cent.
Also the First Ace Attorney fucking slaps and has the best sound track by far. Their “Flop” was an incredible game.
The upbeat music that plays once you hit out with some evidence that puts you on the attack. I've never felt so emotionally hyped and invested from a text-reading game.
I can only guess you’re referring to the “Cornered” pursuit theme that plays when you’ve really starting catching out the current witness in all their lies. Everybody has their favorite version from whatever game but yo me, nothing surpasses the first one.
And on the other hand, when you shout objection and the normal music keeps playing...
Devastating
Having that music start without "OBJECTION" being shouted first feels so weird
Only they'd come back around to Mega Man a bit more
Poor Rock's been languishing for ages, with Trigger being abandoned in space for 25 years now :(
While the final case is probably not as good as other final cases in the series, it probably has one of the best filler chapters with the Steel Samurai
Steel Samurai is my homey, protecting the mean streets of New Neo-Tokyo
Is there a way to play these games on PC or at least on the Switch or something? I know obviously I could pirate them but I was wondering if a proper port had ever been made.
Outside of the non-canon crossover game, the entire franchise is on all modern consoles, including Steam and Switch, in the form of 4 different compilation games. Start with the Phoenix Wright trilogy, then after that you can kinda play the other three compilations in any order. The entire franchise is on sale on Steam rn.
I cannot speak about the quality of the port (I played it on the DS), but Capcom ports Ace Attorney to every system they can.
Windows (Steam): https://store.steampowered.com/app/787480/Phoenix_Wright_Ace_Attorney_Trilogy/
Switch: https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/phoenix-wright-ace-attorney-trilogy-switch/
I own the ace attorney and investigation trilogy on steam and they're faithful, working great adaptations.
Plus the ace attorney trilogy is on deep sale right now.
I love the first game lol. Glad the series made it though. Too many titles for me to continue with it, but I do be coming back to the first game every so often!
I'm currently replaying the original trilogy on my New 3DS, lovely games.
love ace attorney, glad it's still around today
