"Fucking hate" for this situation? You're gonna pop a vein if you ever have real problems!
I don’t know about OP but I can fucking hate something and be completely passive about it at the same time.
We have had typing indicators for 25 years now.
I remember using it first on Google Talk. Good days.
Disclaimer: I just want to say I love the design of lemmy and whoever had a hand in it should pat themselves on the back.
Lemmy also doesn't follow modern design trends like 'infinite scrolling' and even makes better decisions than reddit where clicking on a thread, you know, opens the thread instead of what the thread links to.

Thank fuck there are browser addons that enable this.

Are you familiar with

Are you familiar with https://old.reddit.com/
How much longer do you think Reddit will keep an option that doesn't maximise end user engagement metrics?
Reddit doesn’t really want to open with vpn enabled =(
I hate the "read" function more in different messaging services. And when they show when you and others are online.
Personally, I don't care for any of that shit, but in the past I have had people letting me know that they knew I was online and they knew I had read their message and why hadn't I replied to them yet, hmm???
That shit can fuck all the way off. I need to be in the right headspace to reply to messages. It would be a full time fucking job if I had to sit and reply to people all day when they wanted me to. I don't expect people to reply to me immediately either. I know people have lives that take up their time. I'm not their first priority and I don't kid myself into thinking I'm entitled to be.
Would appreciate the same respect in return.
I believe it's changed the expectations around "instant" messaging. When I was growing up, if someone texted you, you weren't obligated to reply immediately. With IMs, you might reply if you were near your computer.
Now, my project manager messages me on slack over lunch break and then messages me like 15mins later with "Hello???"
The problem is that you have friends. You should put an end to that.
Done. Now what if I want to taunt my enemies by surprise?
What exactly is the issue with this feature if I may ask?
Privacy and pressure I'm guessing. Now the other person knows you've seen the message and the feeling of being perceived when you just want to send a message in your own time can be uncomfortable for some.
with a "message read" checkmark I can understand that, but not with a "user is typing" note...
Who the hell cares if you took 10 minutes to write a sentence? Hell, I'd appreciate it if people used a bit longer and start using more punctuation marks
We don't like being watched, it takes away our freedom, which is of utmost importance. My cats want to sit around me and stare at me all day, the moment I stare back, they don't want to look at me, they don't want to make eye contact, they get so uncomfortable, they'll walk away pretending to be distracted by something else, thinking I'm a fool, I get their games and I beat them at it!

Apparently there's an API for non-group chats and an open-source terminal client (maybe others as well). Good odds that that doesn't send notification. If not, could be modified.
looks a bit further
Bitlbee, an IRC-to-other-chat-protocols gateway, apparently has support for Steam client chat.
https://github.com/bitlbee/bitlbee-steam
I know that that won't send any indication, since IRC doesn't.
It makes other chat systems be aggregated together and look like an IRC server; you then use an IRC client of your choice to talk to people on other chat systems.
What are these "friends" people keep talking about?
I can't say I care too much about this feature, but looking into it I can't seem to find any documentation about it at all. Where are you getting this confirmation that you can't disable it?
I'd just stop using Steam Chat if it's not working for you, there are dozens of game chat services specifically built for chatting in games. Then again, I'd probably stop playing with people that make me self--conscious of typing indicators as well.
Also lol @ anything Valve designs being "modern". Steam Chat looks, feels, and behaves like MSN Messenger did twenty years ago. Don't let the gradients fool you.
may I have a skull?
I can get behind this in general, but I do wonder what your issue with this particular feature is.
