memes aside, this argument is batshit insane. You can watch an anime without having read the manga. You can like derivative works without having consumed the source material. It's ok. let people like things
but how can I achieve this smug feeling of superiority and self-satisfaction if I can not gatekeep stuff?

Sorry for the late getting to this but I've got over 500 messages in my fuckin' inbox...
I'm with you. The behavior is genuinely one reason why I haven't bothered with a lot of anime. The few times I have I've been criticisized like a motherfucker for it being dubbed over subbed or a certain version or whatever and I got exhausted and checked out entirely.
This is part of the reason why I do not engage in online communities related to shows and games and movies that I am currently experiencing or intending on experiencing soon.
sadly, this does mean that I don't get to talk to people about cool shit, but that's better than shitty exchanges with people I'll never meet.
