MODERATORS

The United States is becoming less popular globally in the aftermath of Donald Trump’s return to the White House, according to new data.

The 2025 Democracy Perception Index summarizes attitudes toward democracy, geopolitics and global power players, and canvassed more than 110,000 respondents across 100 countries.

A majority of people surveyed had an overall negative perception of the U.S., marking a steep decline from last year. America’s reputation took a particularly massive hit in EU countries — perhaps unsurprisingly, as U.S. President Donald Trump has called the bloc “horrible,” “pathetic” and “formed to screw the United States.”

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, former NATO chief and founder of the Alliance of Democracies Foundation that coauthored the index, said he was “not surprised that perceptions of the United States have fallen so sharply.”

Meanwhile, China kept improving its global standing, overtaking the U.S. for the first time and recording mostly positive perceptions in all regions except Europe. Russia, the reputation of which tanked in the wake of President Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, is still (slightly) more unpopular than the U.S. — though its image is also improving.

Trump is the embodiment of every negative stereotype that people associate with shitty Americans all bundled up into one disgusting person. And instead of being like "no he's not like all of us I swear most of us are normal" we decided to elect him twice. actions speak louder than words and I think we've proved that.

Yeah, America has been sick for as long as I've been alive, but this act of reprising this clearly awful man to the role of president has shown the world that we don't just have a few bad habits, we have a potentially terminal disease.

This said, most Americans are normal... Which is to say, most are apathetic and small human beings. We're better defined in 2025 as having small dick energy, despite all the bravado for as long as I can remember.

Well, it’s always nice to know that the entire fucking planet hates Trump as much as I do, it doesn’t really help the situation.

In any other scenario I’d be nervous if a coup happened, but if one happened right now under Trump I’d be like “sure let’s see what this new person has to say.”

can't be worse, right?

— everyone, everywhere

Honestly, though, it really couldn’t be much worse. Chances are, this is a safe bet.

I know that trump is the useful idiot to take the blame, but I am sure there are more aspects of America to hate.

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Trump really embodies damn near every toxic facet of american culture. Like to be clear it's not that the negative aspects of america are all somehow his fault, he's just some kind of fucking machine designed exclusively to represent and embrace all the shitty things anyonce can unearth. He's like a Pokémon trainer, but for manifest bigoted christian warmongering imperialism. Gotta catch (and subjugate) them all!

And yet everyone but the republicans are aware of this. And those of them who may have learned of this fact don’t care: they’re the republicans, and therefore believe themselves to be correct. The world’s opinion of them has no meaning to them.

In fact they would learn this and think it means he's awesome, because everywhere that isn't the USA is either a shithole or a pansy liberal enclave.

[–] ABetterTomorrow@lemm.ee 2 points 1 week ago

lol we were never popular. We are the planet’s idiots.
