I read that it's going to cost way more than $400m to inspect, and retro-fit that aircraft to the standards of AF1. It likely won't be finished for his current term, or even his next.

You think he’s just going to take his hat and leave?

Day 115 of explaining that voters are myopic. His cultists may vote for him no matter what, but they make up a small minority of the people who voted for him in 2024.

Biden won in 2020 because Trump failed to meaningfully improve the lives of most voters. Trump won in 2024 because Biden failed to meaningfully improve the lives of most voters. The next Democrat will win in the next election as Trump not only fails to improve the lives of most voters, but actively makes them so much worse. Attempting to run for a third term would be a neat way for him to commit suicide

Bold of you to assume there are going to be elections again

[–] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 month ago

Again, neat way for him to commit suicide. A small group of his cultists were able to breach the Capitol. A much larger group of dissenters would do the same and worse.

This is his forever term! Hail and glory, even the sheiks bow to him (or at least they make the motions)!

The Trojan Horse metaphor is completely unnecessary here, you could hand Trump a golden hand grenade and tell him this is a special gift only for the strongest rulers and he would smugly nod his head as he greedily pulled the pin to see what was inside.

You don't need to disguise things from Trump, his addled brain does that automatically.

Just tape a ponytail to the grenade and call it a horse, Trump will choose to see a glorious horse and fire anyone that points out he is clearly carrying around a live hand grenade even if at a later point you feel bad and tell him yourself that you actually just gave him a grenade.

This is how Stupid + Powerful people operate.

Well that story never sat right with me anyhow. I mean how dumb do you have to be to accept a gigantic and obviously hollow wooden horse as a gift, and not notice it's full of stinking and probably not completely silent soldiers?

Whoever let that in unsuspecting and uninspected was just as dumb as Drumpf.

[–] CuriousRefugee@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 1 month ago (2 children)

There's like a billion sources, but I think in the story, the horse was supposedly left by the Greeks as an offering to the gods (Poseidon?) for safe passage home across the sea. And then the Trojans saw the Greeks had left, and stole the horse to fuck them over.

But the Greeks had anticipated that, and were lying about leaving anyway. They knew if they left it there, then the Trojans would steal the horse and bring it into the city, so they hid inside and then sprang out to kill the guards and open the gates for the rest of the army. So it wasn't a gift for the Trojans. Also, I think somebody did say that it was a trap, but they were ignored or killed somehow

[–] ExtantHuman@lemm.ee 1 points 1 month ago

Poseidon sent a couple of sea serpents to strangle the guy (a priest TO POSEIDON no less, and his two sons) warning the Trojans.

So he was like: "guys, this is a trap". And immediately two giant snake things appear and kill him on the spot. And the rest of the Trojans shrug off that horrific event and ignore the warning...

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 1 points 1 month ago

That makes much more sense!

[–] Forester@pawb.social 3 points 1 month ago

Realistically, I'm not saying that it actually happened. However, it would have been far more likely to be a horse-sized horse statue with one or two dudes inside it. Remember all they had to do was wait for a day slip out and then unlock the side door of the gate from the inside and hold it open, not conquer the city.

Was his country rent controlled?

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Don't threaten us with a good time!

[–] TheFogan@programming.dev 4 points 1 month ago

I mean I totally wish that was the case... unless JD Vance has some really clever deal going on with them, I wouldn't imagine, assassination is the play, you don't kill the guy who's clearly willing to jump at what you want.

[–] griff@lemmings.world 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You’d be a total fool to look that gift horse in the mouth!!!

[–] griff@lemmings.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

How stupid do you think we are?

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Do I really have to say it?

[–] Draegur@lemm.ee 5 points 1 month ago

It's an old used piece of shit sloppy seconds airframe with escalating obsolete maintenance costs. The fucking thing is MADE OF ATTACHED STRINGS

[–] xorollo@leminal.space 4 points 1 month ago

They're giving the emperor some beautiful new clothes!

[–] alekwithak@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

A. We no longer have any national secrets. Any spying on the current administration would count as a public service B. Rapid unscheduled disassembly would also count as public service C. The strings attached... Much more likely a scenario. Much worse than the other options given, especially for the general public.

[–] Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I fucking pray to god it has some explosives inside.

[–] DropThePot@lemy.lol 2 points 1 month ago

When you put it that way maybe he SHOULD take it...

[–] Red_October@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

With this administration you don't need listening devices. If they didn't already add you to the group text you can just slide a cheeseburger across the table and ask.

[–] wanderwisley@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago

We push this button and all the missiles are attracted to the plane.

Promoting American industry by ~~buying American~~ getting airplanes as gifts from other countries.

[–] HexadecimalSky@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

its funny, reading how its a jet they've been wanting to offload, there is a decent chance it literally doesn't have anything nefarious. It might not have been worth the effort to retrofit it, or its threat being more then enough. Of course it could, and that possibility means we ahve to treat as such, but if it has anythingit would be something sophisticated that would elude search right? Flattering trump and pushing $0.5bn+ expense in america? Worth it enough for them.

[–] Forester@pawb.social 1 points 1 month ago

So the fun thing about the pressurized tubes flying through the sky that we call airplanes is that there are many more ways they can fail than sudden discharges of energy resulting in unplanned disassembly.
