I decompiled Echoes of Wisdom. It uses the pretty horrible Hejl Dawson tonemapper. Pretty sure the HDR is going to be fake inverse tonemapping.

Hejl Dawson tonemapper
No idea what this means, but definitely curious. Do you have any links explaining how this works to share?
Helm Dawson tonemapper is a filmic tonemapper built by EA years ago. It's very contrasty, similar to ACES (What Unreal mimics in SDR and uses for HDR).
The problem is, it completely crushes black detail.
https://www.desmos.com/calculator/nrxjolb4fc
Here's it compared to the other common Uncharted2 tonemapper:
Everything under 0 is crushed.
To note, it's exclusively an SDR tonemapper.
I've found this tonemapper in Sleeping Dogs as well and when modding that game for HDR, it was very noticeable there how much it crushed. Nintendo would need to change the tonemapper to an HDR one or, what I think they'll do, fake the HDR by just scaling up the SDR image.
To note, I've replaced the tonemapper in Echoes of Wisdom with a custom HDR tonemapper via Ryujinx and it's entirely something Nintendo can do. I just doubt they will.
Cool stuff, thanks!
Edit: For those interested in examples, I was doing some googling on the topic and found this page comparing several tonemappers: https://github.com/meemknight/tone-mappers
And also this link with ACES vs Hejl Dawson comparison images that shows well the loss of detail in darker areas: https://bb.oolite.space/viewtopic.php?t=21249
Thanks for your work!
I wonder why the paid patches for the other ones.
Nintendo seems to be breaking these patches in 3 "groups".
- Performance upgrades only -> Free
- Performance upgrades+ additional functionality -> Free with Online+Expansion, Paid otherwise (BOTW, TOTK)
- Performance upgrades+ DLC-like additional content -> Paid (Kirby, Mario Party)
Performance upgrades+ additional functionality -> Free with Online+Expansion, Paid otherwise (BOTW, TOTK)
You mean the smart phone apps? Nobody asked them. They should put all performance upgrades free and paid for the extras. One more reason why consoles suck against PC.
Yeah, I agree they're kinda lame as "functional upgrades" and probably not worth paying extra, but I was just clarifying the difference between the paid and free upgrades so far.
FWIW, performance should already be better even without the DLC, just by running on better hardware. You just won't get HDR and the phone app extras.
In this list of patch notes, the only games that specifically mention framerate are ones that had capped framerates - the updates are to uncap them. Any game that's already not hitting its target/max framerate will benefit even without a patch.
Curious to see performance reports. If Echoes of Wisdom is finally stable I'll pick it up.
The real question is if third parties will do anything to fix up some of their games. The titles I'd most like to play on Switch 2 already have shoddy Switch 1 ports, and I fear the titles that will get ported to Switch 2 will again mostly be above its weight class.
Echoes of wisdom was great on the Switch too, definitely worth picking up regardless. ❤️
Edit: oh you mean pick up the 2. I get it.
I held off on Echoes because I've seen some pretty bad reports about its performance issues.
It's weird game in the performance aspect because it would probably feel very stable if they had locked it at 30FPS.
However they aim at 60FPS and the system can't keep up, leading to some very grating framerate oscillation.
Ah. Well it's a fun experience despite the frame rate issues, just like Link's Awakening was.
Pathetic
Finally super Mario sunshine, fire emblem and soul calibur and a GameCube controller for the switch.
We have reached peak humanity
Get you used to it, so it becomes normalised nice
