From what I found online:

During this time period (2015-2016) DJ Khaled’s persona was very pro-doing what’s best for yourself. The “They” referenced here is not non-binary people, but is supposed to represent “people that don’t want the best for you.” Basically saying to surround yourself with good people that want to see you succeed.

That checks out. Fits with his general vibe

Fake. He didn't yell his name at the end of the sentence.

We the best MUSICC

[–] dumbass@leminal.space 53 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I still don't get how he is famous, the best thing he did was getting lost on a jetski for hours.

Ive defended the dude before, and before I do let me make it clear I think his personality is "Annoying egomaniac hypebeast douche" but I do respect his hustle from a business perspective.

He is actually a really good producer and I dont mean in terms of actually mixing and producing the music himself, he is more like a movie producer, he has connections, money and a good ear for talent. He buys a beat, calls some people he thinks would be good for the track or would be good on a track together, pays them to do their verses, pays someone to mix it into a complete track and puts it out. The man was Mr Miami when Miami was blowing up, Pitbull was still "Mr 305", he made flashy obnoxious mainstream rap when everyone was wearing Ed Hardy jeans and Marc Ecko watches... right place, right time and he shot his shot.

I mean the man was the child of palestinian immigrantsand not cashed up ones and is now worth an estimated 70 million having created his own dream job. Have a look at his award nominations on his wikipedia... he is an enormous tool, but he isnt untalented.

I think it's fair to point out that he could be doing all of that behind the scenes and that he doesn't need to be shouting his name on every song

[–] tomenzgg@midwest.social -3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I mean, that's always been the refrain around colored entertainers.

[–] null@slrpnk.net -1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

But that's the point, he's a businessman, not an entertainer.

[–] tomenzgg@midwest.social 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I mean, I'd find it hard to say he's not, at all, an entertainer?

Like, I feel most people know him from seeing performances of him. He, essentially, performs the role of hypeman, a lot of times.

I certainly wouldn't disagree he also acts as a business man but I think he does a lot of entertainment-related work, as well.

He’s also a Palestinian immigrant who built his entire fortune from nothing. And you’re getting downvotes for pointing out the very real common refrains used against many entertainers of color. Everyone freaked the fuck out because Beyoncé put on a cowboy hat for chrissake.

It’s almost like all the most ignorant hivemind elements of Reddit just moved over to lemmy.world - glad they’re mostly confined to one instance at least.

[–] tomenzgg@midwest.social 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

For real; I hope it's mostly just one instance. I haven't been paying attention to instances but it feels shockingly widespread on Lemmy (but, given lemmy.world's size, it could just be that).

Thanks for backing me up and keeping me from feeling crazy.

[–] null@slrpnk.net -4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You're definitely reaching to try and make this a race thing.

[–] tomenzgg@midwest.social 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Ah; I thought you were approaching and conversing in good faith. My mistake.

If you're unfamiliar with the tone policing of "not following proper decorum" (and that's exactly what "he doesn't need to be shouting his name on every song" is; it's not a debate about whether he can: it's an assertion that that's not an appropriate way to behave for the setting), then you should probably familiarize yourself.

But, as a person with lived racial experience, I am very much not reaching.

[–] null@slrpnk.net -4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Ah; I thought you were approaching and conversing in good faith. My mistake.

Ah yes, race-baiting is so good faith.

Fuck off with that holier-than-thou bullshit.

Go back, re-read the discussion, and do better.

[–] tomenzgg@midwest.social 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

You're talking about a black art form, with DJ Khaled doing what every hypeman in the history of the genre has done since its inception; there is no context where saying he's being inappropriate in what he's doing is not racial.

I promise you, your appeals to "race-baiting" (of all things) as a justification of what's going on are not putting you on the political side of the spectrum you usually associate yourself with.

I doubt this will be sufficient to not sound like anything I've said before but I sincerely and genuinely believe you lack context which you aren't willing to hear.

[–] null@slrpnk.net -3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

of what's going on

Which, for perspective, what's "going on" in this context is one comment that you've decided twist and laserfocus on so you can grandstand.

I beg you, re-read the thread and see where you got lost.

Counterpoint, https://youtu.be/KwmWx94iJyY

Probably an unfair assessment because it was an audience of nerds, but holy hell is it painful to see.

How do you act all tough then bail after the third round?

[–] Soulg@ani.social 14 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Do we have to do this on every post

[–] ObviouslyNotBanana@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago

Especially when the screenshot is obviously slightly deep fried lmao

[–] MummysLittleBloodSlut@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I think Xitter screenshots should be banned everywhere on the internet. Not, like, by the government. I just think everyone should agree Xitter sucks and all decide not to give it attention.

No, I want reeducation camps

[–] Randomgal@lemmy.ca -1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Well that's mean 😞

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 22 points 2 days ago

This shit works! I am now in the unfortunate position of knowing who DJ Khaled is. That's probably all he wanted.

[–] Gladaed@feddit.org 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What did it mean? They as in the evil lizard people? Them Commis? Those oligarchs?

[–] neons@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

A.I. given the abysmal pixel count and lighting

[–] Delphia@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago

I mean, this could be what it looks like. It could also be absolutely anything else.

[–] i_stole_ur_taco@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 days ago

It must say TREY and he’s been squabbling with the South Park guys again.
