The love for subtitles took off at the same time Hollywood decided to mix their audio so you can't fucking hear the voices, coincidence that subtitles have surged ? I don't think so. Watch an 80s or 90s movie where you can actually hear the dialogue. Better isn't it ?

I forget what video I watched that explained this, but it essentially said:
"The audio mixing is correct. It is mixed for full surround sound, like those you see in home theaters (probably the very expensive setups!) and actual theaters. There is no reason to have dual-mixed sound, one for those with stereo speakers and one for the surround sound setups, so they don't."
Sooo... Being able to hear the audio if you don't have surround sound isn't a reason ?
I really don't like this timeline, can I have a new one please ?
Hollywood cannot seem to mix audio correctly, but at the same time, I'm a snack fiend and like subtitles because I can't hear dialogue over the sounds of my crunching (we are not the same).
Ehhhh it depends on the final results. There are plenty of 80's movies where the audio mixers didnt have a clue what they were doing
The Untouchables comes to mind

Or something like that gives me chuckle
I love subtitles when I watch something in a language I can't understand.
In media I do understand I hate subtitles because they make me miss the actual visuals of the movie or series because I am reading text at the bottom of the screen instead of focusing on the scene and people.
And if the text is there I can't not look for some reason. It's distracting.
This coupled with watchung subbed anime caused me to enable subtitles by default on everything. Especially action movies.
I used to hate subtitles but now I have them on for literally everything and my experience is actively worse without them. I don't want to misunderstand anything the characters are saying! I want all of the dialogue!
