Things have been weird at work and now I’m stuck in a downtime that’s killing me. I will therefore proceed to kill some time by making shit up based on this picture. I’m sorry. Y’all don’t have to read it really.
the alpha bet
It’s often stated that 1994 marked the end of History. I’ll not revive the pedantic (pathetic?) debate here whether the actual moment aught to be recognized as September 16th’s Ariel School sighting or as October 11th’s landings. This post is about what happened after, whatever that means today.
Humanity has experience with misunderstandings. What with languages, cultures and whatnot. The Babel tower myth and such. Trying to figure out what the cat wants. I’m hesitating to even mention conflicts between men and women out of pity for that miserable tired trope. Cynical resignation would more often than not be the best course of action; might as well get a laugh out of it before the shit hits the fan. I’d argue humanity had no clue how deep, how fundamental, how essential an utter absence of understanding could feel until now.
There was a sense of panic in the newsrooms attempting to cover the event as no image could be captured of the vessels despite their presence across the globe and in large numbers. There was no fancy electromagnetic whatchamacallit shenanigans going on. It just wouldn’t happen. Every single camera on the premises would fail to function for what was established in the coming days to be perfectly valid reasons. Literally millions of devices manifested over the course of a few hours various malfunctions mostly caused by manufacturing faults, as if by a coincidence of ludicrous proportions. A few hundreds were accidentally dropped.
I propose that the first to go try and meet them were the diplomats. You might think "Ha! You’re bonkers! There hasn’t been an actual diplomat for decades!" What if they retroactively "unhappened" just like a million factory fuckups "retroactively happened" on October 11th? Alright. Second were country officials. Yes, countries. In 1994. Sure I know about the great UN One Universality treaty but I don’t buy it. I mean come on. I can’t stand my own neighbour and you’d have me believe at some time in the second half of the twentieth century all country officials resigned in unison and collectively abolished frontiers? I don’t care that it’s textbook History. It’s not human.
Try and return to a normal mindset. One from before. Don’t you see it? How can you explain this eerie lack of communication attempts? Why is nobody going to knock at their door and say hello? How strange is it that our whole strategy hinges on last Thurdsday’s event at L’Olympia? A French childhood educator reading the alphabet in front of a packed audience? Is this really how humanity scientifically establishes understanding with an advanced alien species? Is that really our best bet?
"A" she went...
