Alex Garland is a pretty good director. Ex Machina is one of my favourite films and Annihilation was a demonstration that he isn't so tied down by the source media, but does capture the spiritual essence of a book adaptation, at least.

He's a pretty proven writer and director and has written for video games before (DMC 2013). Elden Ring as a universe has a lot of interesting angles you could approach a story from. I think as an action souls game adaptation , it will be hard to avoid trying to please the two groups of people: one that wants a compelling narrative and another that just wants to see a big boss fight on screen.

I really wish studios would just start hiring writters and making original content. Im so bored of everything being ripped from other media.

[–] embed_me@programming.dev 2 points 4 days ago

Take any trending media in the public consciousness and make a movie based on it. Minecraft, mario, whatever blah blah blah. I'm sick of it all. Don't disturb me I'll be napping

[–] FunnyUsername@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

i agree i immediately do not care about franchise products these days

[–] Holyginz@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

And it isn't that i dont end up liking the media they pull the material from. Its that they just start shoveling these movies out and it feels like there's no actual "love" put into the process, its just trying to make as much money as humanely possible.

Personally I'm keeping my expectations low on this one. Game adaption to movie seem to always go to shit. Though personally would love a movie about the Bloodborne universe. I imagine a horror mystery movie about it.

This noob missed the plot.

Git gud.

[–] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 2 points 5 days ago

Never played. I always thought it had horrible story telling intentionally. From soft games feel like reading a redacted report.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 4 days ago

I have no faith that Hollywood will be able to actually capture the soul of the game's world and story. It's gonna be full of exposition.

Chris Pratt already announced to play Melina.

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 9 points 5 days ago

Hope they make something trippy like The Green Knight

I'm sure they'll fuck it up.

Name one good (serious) videogame movie. One.

[–] GamingChairModel@lemmy.world 25 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It's not a movie, but the Fallout series had a great first season, and I'm looking forward to the second.

[–] trungulox@lemm.ee 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The last of us was great too. Not a movie still. But .

[–] ScoobyDoo27@lemm.ee 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Season 1 was good. Season 2 is pretty terrible.

[–] trungulox@lemm.ee 1 points 3 days ago

Haven’t seen season 2 yet That’s disappointing

[–] simple@lemm.ee 15 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The original Mortal Kombat movie. The newest Sonic movie was also pretty good imo.

But yes, this can probably go very wrong.

Lol it may be an unpopular opinion but I don't think we can call mortal Kombat objectively 'good.' It's a cult classic for sure and a fun watch, but for reference it aired at Quakecon's Master Pancake sat night event one year with the MST3K folks and well.. they don't typically do blockbuster hits

[–] ogeist@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I wonder it is going to be THE Elden Ring story or An Elden Ring story, a small contained story in the Elden Ring world could fly really well, bonus points if Patches kicks the protagonist off a cliff.

[–] hypnicjerk@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

my preference would be a film about the shattering, giving us some (but not too much) more insight into just what fucked the world up so godsdamned much.

but that would need to be extremely faithful to the lore and character designs and i just don't see hollywood showing up for that.

[–] Bob_Robertson_IX@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 5 days ago (2 children)

First, it's A24 and they put out amazing movies .

Second, Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario Bros Movie, and I'm not sure if it would count, but Wreck It Ralph are all good video game movies.

[–] samus12345@lemm.ee 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Wreck It Ralph doesn't count because it wasn't based on an actual video game, but on video games in general. But it was indeed great.

I don't know, just because the video game isn't real doesn't mean that the movie isn't based off of a video game. I think it just shows that the reason most video game movies fail isn't because the movie is bad, but because the fans are too harsh. If Wreck It Ralph replaced the main characters with characters from Mario but still had the same basic plot I don't think it would have been as well received.

[–] dubyakay@lemmy.ca 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Super Mario Bros. (1993) was a cult classic.

The 2023 movie is forgettable garbage.

The Sonic movies are fun though. Knuckles TV as well.

[–] PapstJL4U@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

The Hoper Mario is something - it's so off the rails, that it's crusing on anothet track.

[–] aliceblossom@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

Normally I'd agree, but it being A24 makes me very hopeful.

[–] OmegaMan@lemmings.world 5 points 5 days ago

Does Last of Us count? Sonic movies and Mario were pretty decent too.

[–] samus12345@lemm.ee 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

That one got a lot of hate, but I actually liked it. Not so much the second one, though.

Alex Garland has made some pretty good movies, so there's a chance. I thought his instincts with annihilation were pretty much spot on. But yeah, movies based on games do not have a great track record.

[–] dellish@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

Street Fighter. It's fantastically bad.

[–] Goronmon@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Its funny in this case because not "fucking it up" effectively means making a movie that's barely related to the game outside of the basic setting.

WoW, Prince of Persia

[–] PapstJL4U@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

Doing Edge of Tomorrow style Progression where one actor plays different classes and steadily progresses could be an option. Explore the world from a changing perspective.

“I’ll soon birth thee anew.” — Alex Garland

[–] darthelmet@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

What… uh… I can’t imagine this movie being weird enough to feel like a movie based on a FROMSOFT game while still being accessible to the wide audience needed for a big budget fantasy movie to make money.

[–] MegaUltraChicken@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

"A24" is the only thing here that gives me a tiny bit of hope.

[–] codexarcanum@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

Can you make a movie out of pure lore? Maybe a prequel, like The Fall of Hoarah Loux or Ranni's Rebellion? Will the audience be required to parry things?

[–] dogslayeggs@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Sorry, best we can do is having the audience dodge roll every scene.

[–] PapstJL4U@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Didnt the John Wick movies usee the role effect? Using this one to introduce the dodge role would be funny.
