Welcome to the discussion of US Politics!

Rules:

  1. Post only links to articles, Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive. Do not post entire articles in the body or in the comments.

Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
  3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
  4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

I never imagined I would see a US Senator get manhandled to the ground and handcuffed by federal agents for asking questions at a press conference.

[–] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 47 points 1 week ago

I've imagined it. I've also imagined worse, and I'm fairly certain I'll see it in the not to distant future. Trump is almost at the 'kill legislators and judges' stage of his fascist takeover.

I wonder if Democrats will learn something from this, or if Schumer will demand Padilla apologize before next week.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago

Attempting to ask questions, they steamrolled him before he had the chance to ask.

[–] TipRing@lemmy.world 75 points 1 week ago (2 children)

They claim he didn't identify himself, but the video shows he clearly states "I am Senator Alex Padilla and I have questions for Ms. Noem"

[–] zildjiandrummer1@lemmy.world 33 points 1 week ago (1 children)

why does anyone care what "they" claim at this point? It's probably 70% straight up lies.

70% straight up lies.

Only 70%… I see you’re feeling generous today.

[–] j0ester@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

I’m sure if he knew what was going to happen, he would say “puppy killer Noem”.

That title implies something far less violent than what happened to him. You can detain people without tackling them to the ground.

It's Politico. I'm surprised they didn't go full passive voice and write the headline from the point of view of the handcuffs.

"ICE Agents Appear Concerned by Handcuffed man Laying Prone"

Reminds me of that scene in Pink Floyd “the Wall” where the guy at the microphone starts, pointing out people who don’t belong, and the police just automatically arrest and drag those people out…

Here is video. https://youtu.be/3Cv-TtudBPQ

Still can’t believe the Nostalgia Critic thought this scene was vague.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Somewhat disappointed it's not the Pink Floyd video. ;)

Aren't all members of congress exempt from arrest while performing their duties?

[–] Stillwater@sh.itjust.works 50 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Isn't everyone exempt from arrest when just asking questions?

One would think

[–] Dubiousx99@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago

I think it is defined as they are protected in travel to, from, and while sitting in formal sessions, not official duties.

Snippet from the constitution.

They shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place.

I wish nothing but the worst possible outcomes for every single person within the trump regime.

I hope that their loved ones turn their backs. I hope that the rest of their lives, and the end of their lives, are filled with fear, regret, pain, and crushing loneliness.

[–] BassTurd@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

And honestly, that is only the things that can be said. I wish far worse in these terrorists.

[–] Binky@lemmy.sdf.org 28 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Fuck I hate this administration…

[–] pleasegoaway@lemm.ee 12 points 1 week ago

Regime. It’s a regime, not an administration.

Cory Booker's response speech is pretty incredible: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4_H_KNAakE

Apparently the House is now considering a motion to censure... Padilla... Fucking Mike Johnson
