I hate you Microsoft

[–] LaserTurboShark69@sh.itjust.works 37 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Exact same thing happened to me. Still salty and refuse to play it again

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 1 month ago (6 children)

Agreed. And pirating it is now more difficult because of the shitty garbage movie that made a billion dollars. Plus I don’t know that I can play with my partner on a pirated copy.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 month ago

If the game has you host servers yourself, you can pretty much always use a pirated copy. If they could detect the piracy on your computer anyway they would already be blocking you from playing. If you connect to a server they host then they could have extra verification, but if you're hosting it then it's not going to be anything that isn't already being checked to prevent piracy.

[–] incogtino@lemmy.zip 7 points 4 weeks ago

Try Luanti. If you haven't been playing MC recently you honestly may not even notice the difference

[–] Lifter@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 4 weeks ago

It's really easy. I use SKLauncher and a dedicated server. You need to disable some player verification setting on the server but that's it.

[–] winkerjadams@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

You can also play co-op with a single PC nucleus-coop.github.io/

!luanti@lemmy.zip is a great open source alternative—especially if you played Minecraft a long time ago, and if you refuse to play Microsoft’s Minecraft.

[–] Liz@midwest.social 5 points 4 weeks ago

Vintage Story is an excellent game, worth checking out.

[–] Lenny@lemmy.zip 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I was always wondering about this. Also had an alpha account, assumed it ended after the sale. Sad to see it confirmed 😔

[–] Fermion@feddit.nl 35 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They had a long time period where you could port your mojang account to a Microsoft account, but eventually they shutdown the mojang authentication.

[–] snugglesthefalse@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Yeah there was at least a year where you could port it, I got it in alpha too and still play every so often

[–] SupraMario@lemmy.world 24 points 1 month ago (12 children)

Shouldn't have been done this way. They could have migrated everyone's accounts. They did this so people would miss the emails or completely forget. So they'd have to buy it again if they came back to play it.

[–] Redex68@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (5 children)

I kinda doubt it. That is such an insignificant amount of money to Microsoft, I doubt they'd do it for that reason. It probably has something to do with conforming to regulations or something random.

It was a year long period that was extended for two more years and change, 2020-2023.

[–] Tja@programming.dev 6 points 4 weeks ago

As much as "fuck Microsoft" in general, 3 years seem fair in this case.

[–] Liz@midwest.social 10 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

I might just spam these comments, but, check out Vintage Story.

sold to Microsoft and they deleted my account

Yeah, there was a period where you had to join your Mojang account to a MS account, then they eventually shut down the Mojang auth entirely. If you didn't change over during that time you're SOL. It was announced it was coming over a year before they actually did it.

I go back and play Minecraft every now and then, usually heavily modded. Been playing through the Material Energy 5 modpack for the past little bit.

Same thing happened to me. Still pissed off

[–] Klear@lemmy.world 5 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Just pirate it, who cares?

[–] winkerjadams@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 4 weeks ago

Maybe they wanna pay online. Why should they be punished for doing the right thing and supporting the product? Unfortunately in this age, that is the world we live in, but that doesn't make it right.

Best Father’s Day story I’ve read so far. I really hope it’s true. But since this is EXACTLY the kinda thing I would do for my boy so I’m sure it is.

[–] Zikeji@programming.dev 11 points 1 month ago

The aether mod has been around for a long time, so dad probably found that.

My dad is a living trash human.

I hope I can be remembered fondly, like this dad, by my kids.

[–] SoleInvictus@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

My dad is a dead trash human. I was kinda sad when he died, but life has been so much easier since.

[–] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 8 points 4 weeks ago

I will only remember that your dad was a living trash human. Sorry

[–] Shortstack@reddthat.com 5 points 4 weeks ago

This is why I chose not to procreate, I wouldn't be a good mom and so there wouldn't be any grown kids using me as an example of what not to do

This story reminds me of some friends of mine who are super adamant that you shouldn't tell your kids Santa Claus is real, because when they grow up and find out you deceived them how can they EVER trust you again? My only reaction was that humans aren't robots, we operate on fuzzy logic, and empirically we know we somehow trust our parents anyway, logical contradictions notwithstanding. Their response was just an argument-stopping, "But do we tho?" Whatever dudes, I know I do. Anyway, your dad did an awesome thing, and it's also awesome that Minecraft has been around long enough for people to grow up and have fond childhood memories of it.

Very wholesome, my dad would do something like that. I miss him every day.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

He loves you. ❤️

Loves. You.

I don't understand why the dad would lie about the mod. Wouldn't that be a great thing to teach your son?

I never played Minecraft, but I was a teen when the original Quake came out, and I LOVED exploring all the different mods.

[–] piccolo@sh.itjust.works 13 points 4 weeks ago

In the early days of minecraft modding, it was a real pain in the ass. You had to extract the jar and replace class files directly and rejar it. Mod loaders didnt really exist at that time.

[–] Jake_Farm@sopuli.xyz 8 points 1 month ago

Rest in peace.

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Very very wholesome, thank you.

[–] t_berium@lemmy.world 6 points 4 weeks ago (5 children)
