welcome to the weekly how's your week going thread

this thread is a pretty straightforward and relaxed one for giving updates on how your week is going and chat like that. nothing special

on my front: last week was total chaos, so hoping for things to calm down this week because it is completely fucking up my groove; unfortunately reddit is not making that easy. this is also not ideally timed for my emotional state. anyways, read book 20 for the year (America City by Chris Beckett). on book 21. maybe i'll marathon through a bunch of these in between keeping the site from being on fire

My partner lives in the US, and I'm Canadian. It's been stressful for both of us to pay for visits and to be constantly saying goodbye. I need to get a stable income, then we'll be able to live together. We've been working on an indie game together, and I hope it'll do well. Our Steam page just went up, which feels really nice.

I'm rooting for you!

[–] alottachairs@beehaw.org 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

My wife and I decided we will start trying to get pregnant. we have not, because we live check to check. shes 41 now, and we are just getting older so why not take a chance?

Self love, and self compassion are new concepts in my life this week. I typically rely on repression, and pushing how I feel down. I aim to replace my coping technique from repression, to a more positive and healthier self love.

Like a few others here, this is my first comment and I look forward to new possibilities and new friends, and I hope you have a great rest of your week.

Doing well, thank you for this thread. I'm having a bit of career crisis as I don't know what job I want to get next. Tired of tech and feeling lost haha. I'll figure it out :)

[–] Inspectigator@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

Don't discount the trades! I am very happy in my programming job, but if I ever found myself out of work again, or burt out on the career, I would definitely heavily consider moving my skillset that way!

Honestly, finding this place has been the highlight of my month! This week has been crazy busy at work. About 4 different projects all started going on at once on top of my normal work load and it's been a bit draining. But, i put in for a couple vacation days a month ago and am going to be spending it at a friend's doing lán parties and just general hanging out.

I hope all y'all's is going well! Or will soon be!

[–] Captain_Pieces@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

idk, i've been stuck between a rock and a hard place for awhile but this weeks been rougher than usual. Weirdly I'm feeling hopeful for the future though, maybe it has to get worse before it gets better.

[–] ARandomEternity@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I was just approved in the community, so still exploring.

My university exams are going on so I have been busy with that and only 6 days left before my college life ends (temporarily at least) and it’s daunting for me how adult corporate life would be. I am already making a list of things to do in vacations like joining a gym, starting to read a book that was pending since past several months(any readers of Red Rising by Pierce Brown here??), learning guitar and so on…

I am over all the place, but happy.

[–] Schedar@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Oh man I remember that feeling.

Every time my life has moved on to the next phase things have just gotten better. That doesn’t mean there aren’t bumps (sometime serious giant bumps) along the way or the stuff that came before wasn’t great too but I feel that each new part of my life just enhanced everything that came before. This is a feeling that I know is shared by most people I know too.

I hope that’s the same for you and that everything goes well as you move into “adult corporate life”. Try to turn that daunting feeling into excitement as the new bit starts!

[–] LimitedBrain@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Think I'll have to share in calling this week total chaos as the last few days I've been moving across the country to pursue an internship at NASA. It'll be my first week at work there so here's hoping it goes well. I also have a class I'm currently taking with an exam tomorrow. Very stressful indeed.

[–] Purple_Conflict@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

Doing fine. Today I joined this instance hahaha. I also was able to be productive today, which is nice! I am currently trying to learn a bit of Python and how to use Packet Tracer. It is going fairly good.

I'm waging a losing war against the squirrels for my flower bed. So far, I have saturated the area with Irish Spring soap shreds and sprayed a mix of Repel All/Tobasco sauce on everything. The smell is nauseating.

Does anyone know if those sonic repellant machines actually work?

[–] hellerphant@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

I have no idea, but now I am imagining tiny squirrels in WW2 helmets planning an ambush on your garden, so thanks for that!

Ever since I took on a new role at work, I've been busy attending more meetings with Very Important People than before. For someone like me who prefers not have the attention of Very Important People, it's nerve-wracking.

[–] gingerrich@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

Slowly. But it's almost hump day.

My company is hosting our big event of the year towards the end of the month. We're expecting about 600 people this year. While we've been preparing for the last several months, the stress and worry didn't hit me until today. We have three weeks until we ship our stuff out to the event center and I'm in charge of the logistics. And there are worries that not everything we need will arrive before ship via freight.

I'm also unveiling some new software for some of our volunteers to use at the event. I have no clue if this is going to work, but from my admittedly limited testing with coworkers, it seems like it will. If it doesn't work, that's OK, we can revert to an older system on the fly. But I really want it to work, because I think it'll be a better experience for the volunteers, attendees, and my coworkers. Plus I don't want to have wasted all this time researching and setting this up.

On the plus side, last week my event manager and I met with the AV rental company. We were able to knock off $25,000 from the initial quote by getting rid of stuff we didn't need and by deciding to run some AV stuff ourselves. Didn't feel so bad about splurging on upgrades to my train/plane tickets after that!

This is my 17th edition of this particular annual event. Yeah, I've been with the company that long. Anyway, it always comes together and our attendees are always greatly pleased. If there are issues behind the scenes, our attendees never see or know about them. We have several veteran staff who've helped run this event more times than me, So any stress and worry is generally overblown. But we still never want to rest on our laurels.

Regardless, I'll be happy on July 2, because the event will be over!

Oof I’ve hit the under two week deadline for my final portfolio in school and I’m permastressed. I’ve been finding myself spending hours playing The Long Dark as the unforgiving canadian wilderness is easier than just working on my school work 🫠

[–] Inspectigator@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It's been a rollercoaster... I've been stuck on the step to make cabinet doors for a project I'm working on at home for the last three weeks... but as of last night, it seems like I've broken that barrier wide open, and I finally finished the assembly of four doors, and they all look absolutely fantastic!

On the down side, my kids all got pink eye, and on their "field day" week at school.. Which in and of itself stinks, but the on who has considerable FOMO did this exact thing last year, too, and missed all the stuff then as well. I feel pretty bad for them.

Work is actually pretty cool. But, the MVC architecture for .Net doesnt make a bit of sense to me, and I can't wait to be done with this app so I dont have to use it again.

[–] SoaringFox@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

Dang, pink eye on field day two years in a row? That sucks, send my condolences!

[–] GandalfDG@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago

Currently stuck in the testing phase for an issue at work. The code changes were simple, but trying to test things across pods in Kubernetes is a real pain in the butt. Hoping I'll eventually feel more comfortable with Kubernetes, but there is just so much to learn.

Outside of work I've gotten back into Rollerblading which I hadn't done since middle school, and I have some fun vacation plans coming up.

[–] alyaza@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago (3 children)

oh cool, our landlord is finally fixing the fucking hole in our bathroom ceiling (has been there for like an entire ass year). nice of them to eventually get around to it, i guess

Very good! Just found this community, learning to navigate the site a bit (so far it's nice and straightforward). Made some onigiri for the first time with scrambled egg filling. Came out decent!

[–] EponymousBosh@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago

It's been good so far. We had thought one of my cats had cancer, but we got a call from the vet yesterday and it turns out she doesn't, so that's excellent.

I'm trying out this timer app to try and keep myself on some kind of schedule. So far so good!

[–] JillyB@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago

My coworker broke his wrist pretty bad while we were riding bikes. As a result, I've effectively taken over his responsibilities. Everything in my project is going poorly and the plant I'm working at is in a bit of a crisis. But I'm happy because I'm planning to move later this year to Chicago. I'm excited about the move and excited to work with a different company for the first time since I graduated.

[–] Schedar@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago

My little boy is just at the tail end of Chickenpox… so that has made it a tough week with long sleepless nights (had to be cuddled all night long) and unhappy days. Thankfully he’s a lot better now.

On the plus side, it has been nice having some solo dad time while mum worked and as he started feeling better we’ve been having lots of fun running around the house and playing in the garden.

Now I’ve just got to get caught up with work.. of course it suddenly gets really busy just as I had to take last minute leave!

[–] chahk@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago

Endless and pointless grind at work.

At home I bought a used 125-gallon aquarium 6 months ago that's just sitting empty. I need to reseal it, but I'm too scared to screw it up because I've never done this before. I also need to fix the stand because the one that came with it is cracked and definitely won't hold the weight when it's full of water. But once again I've never done this so it's just sitting there.

I'm a master procrastinator.

I stayed at an Airbnb for a friend's bday last night and had a great time singing along to Road to El Dorado (and kept everyone up with my snoring). I'm back home, cleaning myself and the apartment and will shortly be taking a Tears of the Kingdom break.

[–] jezebelley@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago

I'm from Lemmy.ml and replying to this! Isn't federation great?

...my week is going well, btw. Getting some Qdoba today for lunch with the bf.

[–] ambystoma@feddit.de 2 points 2 years ago

I've had great fun working through Crafting Interpreters (in Haskell and Zig, which were both new to me), and discovering a lot of new music (sophie, underscores, xiu xiu, and more). Other than that, life's been rough, but I'm lucky to have quite a bit of free time recently at least.

[–] BlueDiamond@rammy.site 2 points 2 years ago

Adding that to my TBR. I got back into reading 2 years ago, it's helped my mental health so much by replacing social media. Hope your week calms down\(^-^ )

[–] Gaywallet@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago

I had two absolutely wonderful dates yesterday and I'm still glowing from the experience.

Helping to manage and grow beehaw these last few days has kept me exceptionally busy. It's fun and exciting and challenging and I need to make sure to balance that against my own mental health and if/when to engage with users and when to let others help.

I'm really annoyed with my care team right now when it comes to coordinating the next post-op steps for my peripheral nerve stimulator. I have a lot of feedback for them, but right now just trying to understand what I need to do next and what I need to do to get them to program my shoulder implant. I guess I'm a cyborg bunny now, officially 🤖🐰

[–] chloyster@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago

I'm doing pretty great. Spent all weekend volunteering at pride events and meeting lots of amazing people. Been having fun hanging around beehaw too so that's been a positive as well 😊

[–] gyrfalcon@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I've had better weeks. One of my guinea pigs who has been sick for a while got sick enough that she had to be put down, with the added bonus that this became obvious about 15 minutes before I had to go meet my new landlord to pick up the keys to my new apartment. On the plus side, moving into the new apartment has been easy, I thought I would need to do a lot of back and forth to move stuff before the movers come to take the big things, but seems like that's mostly done. Also, my other guinea pig is doing well despite the loss of her friend, so that is good also.

[–] kessleragain@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I'm really sorry about your guinea pig. It's always tough losing a pet.
