PieFed has a community migration feature. Basically, it can take a remote community and turn it in to a local community. The main advantage of that is that all of the old content will now be properly attached to the new community so it's not lost, but it's imperfect, because the old content doesn't automatically refederate out to show the new group and it doesn't bring subscribers over
