Here's a better form of your 'riddle':
As I was going to saint Ives,
I passed a man with 7 wives,
Each wife had 7 sacks,
Each sack contained 7 cats,
Each cat had 7 kittens,
Each kitten had 7 mittens.
How many were going to saint Ives?
Answer
At least in my riddle it could be implied the man with wives and cats was going in the other direction, as the narrator passed them, making the answer (at least) one going to saint Ives, and (at least) 1 man + 7 wives + (7^3) cats + (7^4) kittens (sacks and mittens aren't entities) = 2752 coming from saint Ives.
If you say that the people he passed were simply slower than him, but not going in the other direction, there are at least 2753 entities going to saint Ives.
The real answer is that we don't have enough information to know how many were going to saint Ives.
