The Department of Homeland Security's intelligence arm plans to cut nearly three-quarters of its full-time employees, shaving its Office of Intelligence & Analysis down from about 1,000 staff to just 275, according to four sources briefed on the matter.

The exact timing of the cuts remains unclear; sources tell CBS News the staff reductions have been in the works for months but were temporarily on hold because of rising tensions overseas after the recent U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. The decision has raised concerns among the nation's police and intelligence gathering agencies, as the U.S. reckons with a heightened threat environment.

DHS' Office of Intelligence & Analysis — created after the September 11 terrorist attacks — is the only member of the U.S. intelligence community tasked with sharing threat information to state, local, tribal and territorial governments across the country.

If the usa turned inward on itself any more it would become a black hole.

I'm no fan of dhs. But on a national scale. On a world scale, This is insane and dangerous. It's mind blowing how badly our government is behaving and the short sightedness of it all. Multiple countries at war or on the verge of war. Elimination of usaid and most foreign aid. Intelligence organizations decimated by layoffs and budget cuts. Internal conflicts rising and dissent growing. A paramility forming that can ignore our internal rules and arrest people on a whim...

This is what happens when the people in charge have no idea what they are doing.

This will take decades to sort out. Maybe more. And we have years more of exactly this sort of behavior.

The American empire is falling. Torn apart from the inside by greedy madmen.

As an American, I can't say I'm thrilled about it. But God damn it is happening quickly.

And I wonder how many were going to focus on threat number one anyway, which is right wing domestic terrorism.

This could be a grand opportunity for the people who aren't Nazis to take a swing.

Fusion centers are still listening, and ICE is about to hire a fuck ton of analysts. I don't expect the NSA to play ball though, they're just going to sit in the background through all of this, they know the last time you scratched your privates.

They're setting up the groundwork for terrorism.

[–] thejoker954@lemmy.world 21 points 15 hours ago

And setting up ICE as the only game in town.

[–] onslaught545@lemmy.zip 5 points 15 hours ago

That really doesn't make sense, though, because they haven't had a problem with allowing terrorism to happen up to this point.

I'm all for less DHS can we do with with border control and ice too? Maybe a dash of the FBI and CIA? Military too.

Looks like these were the guys who would have warned everyone when Iran was s ending someone over for revenge. I guess terrorism never happens if you close your eyes, cover your ears, and loudly say “LA LA LA. I CANT HEAR YOU. LA LA”

[–] Sprocketfree@sh.itjust.works 1 points 7 hours ago

Id rather a terrorist get me then deal with TSA again

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

I thought they planned on funding ICE to a ridiculous degree, given that immigration is really that much of a problem...

The attempt on my life has left me scarred and deformed, but I assure you my resolve has never been stronger.
