there was this weird guy who hung out in our irc channel, and apparently he was logging EVERYTHING, without telling any of us.

Well one day he decides to prank me a little, he logs in as a new user and he starts pasting MY sentences out of a 2 year old log he had, one at a time.

There had been construction happening at 7am and i had been ranting about it. Well hearing this guy ranting about the 7am construction reminded me of when that happened to me! So i start responding like OH MAN THAT'S BULLSHIT THAT HAPPENED TO ME TOO. He managed to keep me going for like 20 minutes just posting my own stuff until finally something gave up the ruse.

Pretty funny in the end. Still think he was a weirdo for logging our chats but what can you do.

I never used IRC so idk much about the clients, but is it possible his client just did that as a packaged feature?

I don't mean that the physical aspect of logging was weird; ircII had per window logging even back then but it had to be manually set on.

I mean the social aspect of hanging out with people for years in a private chat room and logging them without telling them. Everyone in the group was surprised and annoyed to find out he did this it was a close knit group and we shared a lot in there. The internet was much smaller 30 years ago and far less privacy focused, we learned due to people like that with no chill!

Yeah all clients keep chat logs to some extent to allow you to scroll back etc. Some clients like IRSSI delete logs after 24 days I think, but Hexchat just lets logs grow indefinitely and leave it to you to set up deletion of old logs.

I have some screen recording software on my computer that I occasionally accidentally leave running. One time, without knowing that I was recording myself, I ended up watching a whole movie with my friends, so the whole movie and our conversations were recorded.

A couple years later I found the video file and decided to rewatch the movie via the recording I took, so I was also hearing my conversations from the past.

So many times during the movie rewatch, I would come up with the exact same response in the conversation just before or after my past recorded self would say the same thing.
