Yes, I do still browse reddit, mainly for hockey and some niche subs that aren't here yet. Once in a while I dip my toes into r/all to see the garbage that floats to the top and this one popped up today.

r/conspiracy has always been a shithole, but when I first saw this post I thought it was on a meme sub, but no, those morons actually believe this shit. Truly blows my mind how amazingly stupid a lot of people are.

If you feel like having some of your brain cells commit suicide you can read the comments here - https://www.reddit.com/r/conspiracy/comments/1m6p3p6/octopuses_lived_before_dinosaurs_and_were/

If there's a better way to share a reddit post without giving them clicks let me know and I'll edit my link. I know I've seen it before but I don't remember what it was.

They don’t have eight arms. If anything, they have eight crazy toes and one foot.

[–] pubquiz@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

And surprisingly tasty. It's a complete package.

Super crazy alien monsters from outer space!!!!!!

Dies after a Max of 4 years

[–] TheIvoryTower@lemmy.world 45 points 3 days ago (2 children)

The fact that there are very few fossils of soft bodied creatures kinda misses the point.

All the evolutionary diversity of molluscs is still alive. Squids, nautiluses, cuttlefish, snails slugs.

What’s the hypothesis here? An alien meteorite landed with 800 types of cephalopod, that just by chance share 97% of their DNA with slugs and snails that already existed on Earth?

[–] Nico_198X@europe.pub 25 points 3 days ago (1 children)

slugs and snails are ALSO aliens!

sweating profusely

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What if the protooctopus is a common ancestor to the 800 types of cephalopods?

[–] TheIvoryTower@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Then why are all those cephalopods so closely related to all the other non-cephalopod molluscs?

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Alien cephalopod had sex with molluscs? /s

[–] TheIvoryTower@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

The best scientific theory is the sexiest one, so yes.

No clear evolutionary path in the fossil record.

...for the creatures that have no bones and only a beak that could even fossilize? Color me SHOCKED their ancestors didn't leave fossils.

[–] ook@discuss.tchncs.de 32 points 3 days ago (2 children)

You... are looking at a fossil of one. That's what the post is about. I mean, maybe they fossilize less frequent than other animals, but it seems like they do.

[–] Mirshe@lemmy.world 21 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Yup. It's not that soft tissue DOESN'T fossilize, it's just that the conditions to do so are much rarer, and soft tissue is obviously much more susceptible to degradation before fossilization.

[–] AFallingAnvil@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Not gonna lie, I was assuming even the picture was made up/AI bullshit. Bit of egg on my face there

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

The sentiment is still correct though, even bone fossils are exceedingly rare. I can’t remember the exact estimate but of all the people alive in the US, archeologists 1 million years from now would be lucky to find 60 human bones. I’m not sure if that included teeth however.

Small discussion about this fossil on Lemmy yesterday:

https://mander.xyz/post/34422423

To recap: that's not the correct age or species. Soft tissues do make fossils. This protooctopus looks different from modern octopi.

[–] rizzothesmall@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago

Hooray, I've been referenced! Now I'm a real science doer!

[–] DrFistington@lemmy.world 19 points 4 days ago

I don't think they realize that aquatic based life on earth had several hundred extra million years to evolve before even the most basic bitch fish-frogs crawled out of the primordial pond of orgy water that ended up spawning us

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 8 points 3 days ago

God damn it. I had work to do today and now I'm going to be reading about octopuses instead.

[–] AppleTea@lemmy.zip 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

plenty of sea critters have blue blood

horseshoe crab blood (blue) is even widely used to verify disinfection procedures

[–] DrSoap@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

I read about that. It made me feel bad for the horseshoe crabs.

[–] DrSoap@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Resident alien has a funny gag related to this where the alien saw an octopus in a restaurant and the octopus said we've been waiting for you!

[–] SupraMario@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

And was voiced by Nathan Fillion. Was a great cameo...plus we get Jewel Staite in this season. Just need Adam Baldwin, Gina Torres, Summer Glau, Morerna Baccarin, Ron Glass and Sean Maher and we got the crew of serenity back.

[–] deltapi@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I've got some bad news for you about Ron Glass ...

[–] SupraMario@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Yea I know, but... maybe like a picture on the wall or something.

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Is that even an octopus? Like yeah, it has tentacles, but that doesnt mean its an octopus.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 12 points 3 days ago

The wiki article has more info, but it's basically one fossil, originally classified as octopus, but that is now retracted and its connection to anything is not known yet.

Oh no, so that falls right into the Reddit trap of, well then it must be alien.

[–] AmosBurton_ThatGuy@lemmy.ca 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

If you're expecting any kind of critical thinking or even the slightest bit of intelligence, then you won't find it in that sub lmao

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I used to browse r/SaturnStormCube and the like for occultist story ideas so I'm used to crazy. But this is just full blown stupidity. There was 1 redditor talking about arms, and they said it had 10.

[–] Noite_Etion@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Without reading the title I looked at the image and thought someone was cooking octopus and really really burnt it.

[–] ptolemai@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Looks like octopus senbei Gis tako sembei

[–] slaneesh_is_right@lemmy.org 2 points 3 days ago

Who is they? Some people here sait the same shit about the same post. And it wasn't even a conspiracy sub.

[–] vga@sopuli.xyz 1 points 3 days ago

They taste great though so thanks for coming by.
