I've been using Surfshark for years, but this month they've sent at least two push notifications to my phone that were purely marketing.

I don't pay to see adverts.

Are there any VPN providers people would recommend that don't let their marketing department off the leash to bother their customers?

Are notifications a critical part of using a vpn? I haven’t used a third party one in a while, so maybe I’m forgetting something; why not just disable notifications?

Ah, that's a great idea actually. thank you!

Most people who seem know what they're doing recommend Mullvad and Proton.

I'm using Proton, because I use the mail as a backup, and have never had a notification. Notifications can be controlled in the account page. The IPv6 isn't complete on Proton yet. My downloaded WireGuard configuration files for UniFi didn't include IPv6.

That said, your two or three notifications in a month isn't really a lot.

You're right, I've heard of both of those as fairly popular but wasn't sure if any scandals had gone down with either lately. I've gone for Mullvad :)

I know it's not loads of notifications, but there are precious few spaces available to us any more that aren't crammed with advertising. If an app I pay for wants to send me adverts for itself, I'm going to uninstall it 🤷‍♂️

Not really aware of any scandals. I know that there was some comment on an officer's political view. I will try Mullvad when this contract expires.

I hear you about the notifications. There's a couple of online groups I'm a member of that I'm not so interested anymore .. you can guess the rest. It's no real bother.

Mullvad servers rarely change IPs, so you might have some issues with their servers being blacklisted by some sites (and won’t be able to watch streaming series/movies)

5€/month is also pretty expensive for the service
