Yeah, but do they like Huey Lewis and the News?

Hey Paulina!

I'm old. What is a "sigma film bro"?

Ah the stupid wolf shit. Thanks I was hung up on the film part. So "basic person more murdery than loner nerd"? Isn't that like the whole point of American Psycho?

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 32 points 2 months ago (15 children)

The joke is leaning more on the OCD/narcissistic characteristics of Patrick Bateman than the murdery part. Like, having a ridiculously tedious self-care routine due to vanity (or self-consciousness, take your pick).

Sigma nuts, haHAA

[–] shininghero@pawb.social 7 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Hell if I know. I've heard the term "Sigma Grindset" before, but it can't be tied to what I'm thinking of.
You'd have to be the worst workaholic ever to be applying Six Sigma/Agile stuff to your personal life.

[–] Shiggles@sh.itjust.works 12 points 2 months ago

It’s tied to the alpha/beta wolf bollocks. “Sigma” wolves exist outside of the normal order but are on par with “alphas”.

Basically, grifters wanted to expand their customer base to include lonely people lmao

[–] themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I think (hope) sigma grindset is a joke, in the way that it makes fun of entrepreneur influencers by being so out of line it can't possibly be true. I have however no proof to offer.

[–] L7HM77@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 months ago

I remember it starting back on reddit in response to the whole "alpha" thing. The point was to goad the alphabros to ask "what's sigma" then hit them with "sigma nuts." They would get so pissed off, there was a whole subreddit for barbaric sigma memes mocking them and posting screenshots of sigma nuts.

Then they started taking it seriously, and the joke shifted to asking what they thought sigma meant, and the subreddit started posting screenshots of the insane replies.

Then, people started taking it TOO seriously, and everything went downhill.

You'd have to be the worst workaholic ever to be applying Six Sigma/Agile stuff to your personal life.

It feels weird to see Six Sigma implicitly paired with Agile instead of Lean. That said, Six Sigma is generally concerned with much higher quantities than are found in personal life, so yeah that would be nuts. Although, Agile and Lean do both have stuff that could be reasonably applied to personal life.

I mean, putting something on your shopping list when it's running low is basically just Kanban.

upper middle class tiktok self-identified influencer in pastel workout set with a thirteen step skincare routine and a green juice

  • Is a Guy - normal, regular, unusual

  • Is a Girl - Reagan Era serial killer

The mind of the "Sigma" Male is fascinating.

[–] tja@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 months ago

Not sure I understand what you want to say here

[–] mobotsar@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

If I saw a dude in pastel athleisure holding a green juice- maybe I'm giving away the population density 'round here- but I think I'd do a triple-take.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

I'd check my calendar to make sure I wasn't in the 80s. But otherwise, idk, seems like a normal California summer to me.

[–] LustyArgonianMana@lemmy.world -2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (3 children)

No, they aren't. It is largely men who commit the most murder incl serial killing. We just had a killer get caught in Arkansas that was a man. Also Travis Decker. Then some kind of unsolved quadruple murders in Tennessee recently too. Weird way to hate on women with delusional lies and then encourage incels to attack them by portraying women as the real evil - classic vulnerable narcissist move.

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11199-020-01193-3

Among men and women collective narcissism was associated with tolerance of domestic violence against women, whereas national in-group satisfaction was associated with rejection of violence against women.

[–] Laser@feddit.org 37 points 2 months ago (2 children)

You're both seeing the character differently. It wasn't only about the murders for the OP. Bateman, in a superficial society, tries to be something special among his peers through meaningless acts (most notably the business cards scene, but even his self-care and self-improvement are ultimately means to the end to be better compared to others). It's not that he isn't closer to men than women - he or rather his archetype generally is - but that for these two subgroups within the genders, it's reversed. (Whether the statement is correct or not is a topic for debate)

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 5 points 2 months ago

Also, he possibly isn’t killing anyone at all - at least directly.

[–] LustyArgonianMana@lemmy.world -4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Then bring up Narcissus. Bateman is intentionally a serial killer and not removed from his murders whatsoever. Eg "you fuck a snake one time and then everyone calls you snakefucker" - we all think of Bateman as a serial killer first.

Also, men engage in tons of fucking physical "self care," eg testosterone, doping, weightlifting, Joe Rogan, carnivore diet, Andrew Tate, looksmaxxing, rogaine, meth, coke, adderall. Men literally die from ODing on drugs to look better. Women do too, but they aren't "more obsessed" with their looks compared to their male peers. It's a genuinely stupid premise that only feeds into hating women narratives

[–] Regrettable_incident@lemmy.world 16 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Maybe I misunderstood it but I got the impression that Bateman believes he's a serial killer, but he's not the most reliable so it could all be fantasy. Maybe I read too much into it. But yeah American Psycho is profoundly misogynistic and I get the impression Brett Easton Ellis is too

[–] Turret3857 3 points 2 months ago

I also got the impression that the murders werent real.

[–] LustyArgonianMana@lemmy.world -3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Okay, but it's not about the nuance of the book itself, it's again, that we all know Bateman as a serial killer for the purpose of the meme. Eg when we talk about Frankenstein, the readers know we mean Frankenstein's monster but everyone just refers to him as Frankenstein himself.

[–] baguettefish@discuss.tchncs.de 18 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

i think the post was more about how shallow and consumerist patrick bateman is and how shallow some women can be. a lot of the movie (haven't read the novel) goes into his routines, his self-care and the idolization of brands, expensive things, status, money, looks and appearance.

[–] LustyArgonianMana@lemmy.world -2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

How are sigma film bros above this?

[–] Laser@feddit.org 11 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (13 children)

They lack the commitment and the personal investment... which doesn't put them above it, which is why the the post might be offensive to them. Hence the two hornet nests remark

A stunning example of missing the point.
