When your understanding doesn't account for verifiable phenomenon, your understanding is incomplete. Science progresses by accepting this truth and seeking to complete our understanding, but it is not how we are primed to think. We cling desperately to flawed understandings because letting go of them requires a ton of mental adjustment. They'd need to change so much of how they're wired to understand the social world, so unless they have the motivation, they simply won't do it.
"The Jews were a minority in 1945 Germany". Make them explain how it's different or be an open holocaust denier, win win.

To be fair, those same people also eschew advanced math, physics, and science of any kind.
I would say that a mathematician would rather write i²=-1 than sqrt(-1)=i
