I was just about to ask for an explanation about Iowa State getting a first place vote, then I saw Maryland got a first place vote (their only points), and now I need an explanation even more.

Well, at least my poll won't be the most unusual. Here is my poll, just to show that I am not afraid to share either. Feel free to poke it. It is all human.

  1. Ohio State
  2. LSU
  3. Penn State
  4. Oregon
  5. Miami
  6. South Carolina
  7. Georgia
  8. Iowa State
  9. Arizona State
  10. SMU
  11. Clemson
  12. Illinois
  13. Texas
  14. Notre Dame
  15. Indiana
  16. Texas Tech
  17. Florida State
  18. Michigan
  19. Tennessee
  20. Florida
  21. BYU
  22. TCU
  23. Alabama
  24. USF
  25. Nebraska

And the next 5

  1. Kansas State

  2. UNLV

  3. Georgia Tech

  4. Utah

  5. Oklahoma

Maryland was me. I don't know exactly how that happened. My best guess is that Maryland had a big win over a "decently average" opponent (read: not a cupcake).

How did it decide FAU was decent? I dunno. Based on non-conference games, it thinks the American conference is the best Group of 6 conference, which is probably helping.

Like last year, I'm sure it these outliers will become less frequent and extreme as it gets more data.

Iowa State was me. Explanation: https://a.lemmy.world/lemmy.world/comment/19186304

They get credit for beating a team that has a > .000 record (Kansas State at .500), and a tad of extra credit for doing it on a neutral field.

My rankings, whether algorithm or hand-picked attempt to avoid results from previous seasons, and try to only look at the current season's results.

I'm curious about Maryland too. Maybe something to do with margin of victory?

Yeah, that is sound logic for a computer poll. Really just week one jank that will even itself out. Although, Iowas State being #1 wouldn't be bad...

Yeah, that's part of it. Though you'll notice it wasn't the largest MOV last week, by a long shot. I did put in guardrails, so running up the score won't impact the ratings so much.

Points of Interest:

  • The biggest loser this week is alabama! Dropping an astonishing 31 spots to fall out of the top 25 entirely from their top 10 spot a week ago!
  • Other notable losers include Texas (-12), Notre Dame (-12), and Clemson (-18). All three of which suffered defeats from top 10 teams
  • Iowa State (+15) and Tennessee (+12) are the biggest movers in the other direction in the top 25
  • Banner almost says ugly outcome if you squint funny at it (ogli outcm)
