Just watched the first couple of episodes the other day for the first time and honestly some of it is incredibly dated at this point.

[–] ProfThadBach@lemmy.world 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

But did you mention the war? I did but I think I got away with it.

[–] turdburglar@piefed.social 6 points 2 weeks ago

there is too much butter on. those. trays.

no no señor… uno, dos, tres.

some of it is incredibly dated at this point.

Like what? I understand if you don't find it funny، but dated is an odd comment.

[–] HakFoo@lemmy.sdf.org 25 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

I suspect "dated" means "an ambient level of racism that fit in the 1970s"

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 23 points 2 weeks ago

It satirised an ambient level of racism which is perennial.

[–] mohab@piefed.social 17 points 2 weeks ago

Hmm… still an odd comment given Fawlty is the most politically incorrect character and is always the butt of the joke.

Kinda like David/Michael in The Office or Larry in Curb.

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Like All in the Family? But honestly that show was also very satirical about the racism it portrayed and if you didn’t know better it would appear very cringe worthy. Same could be said about the Jeffersons. But that show was a spin off of All in The Family so I guess that tracks.

Yes I’m old.

I find parts of it incredibly funny but also parts are clearly a sign of the times.

Like for example the show opening with berating the foreign worker and the slew of language and culture jokes directed at the bellman.

Some funny stuff but also rubs me the wrong way.

[–] mohab@piefed.social 18 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Understandable.

I think it's supposed to rub you the wrong way. In that first episode, for example, Basil is berating Manuel for repeatedly failing to understand instructions, but then a guest who speaks fluent Spanish walks in and Manuel understands him right away, making it clear the problem was Basil's shit Spanish, not Manuel's ability to understand instructions.

Ultimately, Basil is a delusional hypocrite and always the butt of the joke.

Yes and there are ways to do that without becoming racially icky and that’s where it gets the dated and sign of the time stamp from me.

[–] mohab@piefed.social 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I don't disagree there are other ways to go about it; however, I don't see time as a factor here. The Office did this just 2 decades ago, and Curb did this and it wrapped up just last year.

[–] BroBot9000@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah and that’s two decades ago. Soon enough people are going to talk about how dated and cringe parts of both of those already are.

[–] mohab@piefed.social 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Curb just ended last year. South Park is still going strong.

Not really sure why you're trying to make it sound like it's "objectively" dated "and everyone agrees" when it's clearly just a matter of preference.

You can just say you don't like it and it's not for you without trying to speak for others.

[–] BroBot9000@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

When did South Park come into this? Curb and the office have big parts that are already dated and cringe. In my opinion, in case it wasn’t clear.

Not really sure why you're trying to make it sound like it's "objectively" dated "and everyone agrees" when it's clearly just a matter of preference.

I’m not, have been stating my opinion this entire time. As time goes on people will say that shows become dated. Thats simple reality and not me speaking for others as you put it.

You’ve been the one not able to handle someone not enjoying or getting par of the show. 🤦‍♂️

I’m fine with not enjoying everything. I like parts of the show but it’s also dated and a sign of the times in my opinion.

[–] mohab@piefed.social 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

If you have to ask why South Park come into this, you should go watch/re-watch it. Cartman is of the same breed as Michael, David, Basil, or Larry.

Whether you like Fawlty Towers or not is of no relevance. You tried to pass off your preference as some kind of critique and I'm calling you out because it doesn't hold any water and you haven't backed it up with any evidence.

It's a public forum. You're free to provide reasons why you hold this opinion or back out.

And it's still weird you're saying you're not speaking for anyone else while speculating on people's preferences.

[–] BroBot9000@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Ahhh I see I triggered a “debate bro” Blocking you after this.

Already stated my opinion on the shows having parts that are dated and cringe. I’m not going to explain to you why. Nobody owes you an explanation of their opinions.

With time every show will become dated. That’s not some personal opinion passed as people’s preferences 🤦‍♂️

Please go outside and touch grass.

[–] mohab@piefed.social 3 points 2 weeks ago

You're like 6 comments deep into a discussion about a 1970s show you don't even like. Who are you trying to fool with this ChatGPT ass comment 😂

I used to love this as a kid!

First episode of the second season is one of my all time fav TV episodes. Watching John Cleese melt down is too funny
