Literally one of the reasons they shouldn't be that huge....

We need a monopoly buster president. Neoliberals and Republicans both spent decades letting them consolidate because it was easier to control the narratives When you had to buy off 3 corps instead of 300.

A problem of their own making. Perhaps they shouldn’t have sucked up to Trump by going easy on him during newscasts and debates, or by casting him on SNL or tussling his hair on Jimmy Fallon.

They're not vulnerable to anything. They're going to make money whether the US is a shining example of democracy or a totalitarian nightmare. They just go with the flow, obey as necessary, and enjoy weekends on yachts regardless.

WE are the ones who suffer and are vulnerable, because we're not organized and can't fight back effectively.

that’s what happens when you allow billionaires to consolidate their power through media

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

It’s just consolidation in general. Whether the owner of a TV network has a million dollars, a billion dollars, or a trillion dollars, the issue is consolidation of control over the whole TV network.

This is extremely dangerous to our democracy.

What load of crap. This type of stuff has been around for decades, remember when Bush the first went on a tirade about the Simpsons and the Married with Children?

They're just spinless now because of decades of consolidation and being drunk on money.

Grandma, we're watching things on the internet now. It's consolidation of the media because those formerly powerful outlets are dying and now these things are cheap.

This is a Boomer problem, and I'm fucking tired of Boomers running stuff, because they suck at it.

I propose a Constitutional Amendment that the voting age starts at 18 and ENDS at 70. And that no one over the age of 70 can be elected to anything Federal ever again. That anyone currently in office over the age of 70 be kicked out right the fuck now.

Then let all the Boomers exist in their paranoid racist little bubble getting scammed and buying pillows and catheters from whoever the TV tells them.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

Literally too many politicians over 70 to ever make that a viable amendment.

[–] onslaught545@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I disagree with a max age limit on voting. Someone who's 70 can still live 30 more years, and they deserve to be able to have a say in a system that can directly impact them.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Sure, but then they don't have to live with the consequences.

Meanwhile, most people under 70 hope to make it to 70 and beyond. Better make sure they are voting in their future-selfs interest.

[–] onslaught545@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

The point is that they actually might have to deal with the consequences, especially if there's a candidate who will do things to hurt them, like fuck up social security or Medicaid.

Everyone deserves to have their voice heard in the system they live in, and setting an arbitrary age limit is unconscionable. It's basically telling them to fuck off and die.

[–] GreenShimada@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

OK, but what if they have to trade their driver's license for voting rights?
