Funny trivia about that song; The English version was #1 in Germany and the German version was #1 in the US.

In the Netherlands we have/like several popular German artists, for instance this one by Falco was a big hit.

Falco - Der Kommissar

Not the time I've encountered such a confusion.

[–] kindenough@kbin.earth 3 points 1 week ago

My bad. Certainly he was.

[–] zout@fedia.io 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'd say Jeanny or Rock me Amadeus were a lot bigger. There was also Matthias Reim - Verdammt ich lieb dich.

[–] kindenough@kbin.earth 2 points 1 week ago

True.

Der Kommissar was his first hit in the Netherlands though. Jeanny and Rock Me Amadeus produced by Bolland & Bolland (Dutch producer duo but you probably know).

Other German songs from what I remember as a teenager… Halt Mich, Völlig Losgelöst, Da Da Da, Skandal in Sperrbezirk.

Idk most famous but to me "German music" contains:

  • Kraftwerk
  • Amon Duul II
  • Can
  • KMFDM
  • Rammstein
  • Dolls United's version of Eine Insel Mit Zwei Bergen
  • 99 Luftballoons
  • Mo-Do Eins Zwei Polezei
  • Heidevolk, oddly
  • That one Alestorm EP with Weiber Und Wein
  • Blumchen Heut' ist Mein Tag
  • Bubbles Bidibodi Bidibu
  • Centhron
  • Falkenbach
  • Atari Teenage Riot
  • Neu!
  • Neun Welten

Uhhhh fuck I know I'm forgetting some..

Alphaville were German, IIRC. Their song Forever Young was huge in Europe

[–] johnydoe666@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Heidevolk, AFAIK, doesn’t have a song in German though. They sing in Dutch and sometimes English

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Which is the odd part lol. Idk why I associate them with Germany, but I'm sure my brain has a reason.

[–] johnydoe666@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago

I do believe they are more popular and do more shows outside of the Netherlands, so probably in Germany as well. That could be it

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Wasn't Scorpion also German?

Die Woodys - Fichtl's Lied

[–] zout@fedia.io 1 points 1 week ago

Seriously: I'm Dutch, so we know a lot of them. Maybe Nicole - Ein bisschen Frieden?

[–] Tuuktuuk@piefed.ee 8 points 1 week ago

Cannot speak for all if us Finns, but at least for me the first association was: "Rammstein", and when I continued pondering which song specifically, my brain popped an answer as if it was a self clarity: "Du hast".

[–] d_k_bo@feddit.org 8 points 1 week ago

sad Beethoven noises

[–] Hello_there@fedia.io 8 points 1 week ago

German? Is Rammstein still big?

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 7 points 1 week ago

I think about AmeriKa by Rammstein.

[–] Jakylla@jlai.lu 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Yeah... Asking me (French) about German music, I'll tell you either Nena or Tokyo Hotel. I Think Nena is most known

[–] Bourff@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Is Tokyo Hotel still a thing?

[–] Jakylla@jlai.lu 1 points 1 week ago

Don't think so, but I never actually listened to them so I may be wrong

[–] fibojoly@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

We... we don't talk about Tokyo Hotel.

[–] fibojoly@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago

I reckon Scorpions was my first contact, in France. Everybody knows the Winds of Change here. Rammstein came later for me, with Du Riechst So Gut. I love them, they're still on my daily commute music.

[–] Martj9@piefed.social 4 points 1 week ago

I'm a great fan of 80s pop songs. In my opinion Alphaville's Big In Japan is absolute best

[–] notsosure@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

I’m guessing; # Er gehört zu mir
