Don't be so sure it isn't. There are larger instances that care what goes on the front page and can control it.

As you have already hinted: commercial interests motivate the design of such algorithms. That means: capitalism is at fault. Again.
Surprisingly, according to Lyotard, its might be the other way round: connections fuel hatred. Independently, they are also profitable. Thus, again, scaling is inherently evil.
