Such a horrible, disgraceful war. Such a tragic war. Such an interesting war. Such a veritably iconic war in American history.

Anyway, that's really cool. I seem to remember lots of Matthew Brady's posed shots, but I like stuff like this more, which gives a better glimpse of how things were, mais non?

Harder in a time without snapshot cameras, but I agree, there's something very fascinating about these unposed photos!

Do you have any more of these 'candid shots', PJ?

Me, I was absolutely obsessed with the ACW when I was around 10yo. Indeed, I was sort of the 'leading expert' at school at the time, when we studied it in 4th grade, my little head filled to the brim with all manner of dates and battles and other such trivia, haha.

I even somehow persuaded the entire family (including grandparents, who'd been all around the world) to spend a summer vacation at Gettysburg national park and grounds.

But the most ridoinkulous thing of all? I didn't even know WTF the civil war was really fought for, anyway! That said, I've come to realise.

Not on hand, unfortunately, but I've definitely seen others. I'll try to remember to tag you if I come across them and post them.

They must have raided a church for those pews.

Kind of funny how you can immediately pick out Grant from the cigar. If I had to lead the Union army, I'd probably smoke all the time too.
