Seriously. I will not conflate an image format with a brand of peanut butter.

[–] SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I gust hate how jif sounds. The hard G sounds proper.

[–] caseyweederman@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Hang on, I can never find it when it's relevant. Where's that gif of the giraffes passing pictures back and forth?

[–] caseyweederman@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

It turns out it was really easy this time:
Can't upload, too wide.
Here's this godawful url, good luck to everybody's clients:
Gif of two giraffes passing an image back and forth
Text over the gif reads:

It's pronounced "JIF" because it stands for Giraffic Interchange Format

(Paraphrase brought to you by my very short short-term memory)

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago (6 children)

It is both. There is room in this world for two pronunciations of words.

[–] dantheclamman@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I pronounce it 'gif' myself

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I know people who pronounce it both ways, so I understand that it is both.

[–] SanctimoniousApe@lemmings.world 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

With a username like that, I would expect that since you're drunk on Apple wine & therefore probably screw it up yourself... 😜

[–] SanctimoniousApe@lemmings.world 4 points 1 week ago (5 children)

Yeah, like you're the first to tell me that.

Explanation: Around the turn of the millennium, I was trying to come up with a username to use on a particular site that had a shortish character count limit for usernames. My goal was something related to the fact that I would often be making my points in arguments with "holier-than-thou" types by taking what they were saying, and turning it on its head so the offensive stuff was directed back at them.

I also happened to learn shortly beforehand that many years ago "'ape" was somewhat commonly used as a verb to mean "imitate" or "copy."

I'm sure you can figure the rest out.

And no I'm certainly not a drunk but enjoy the rich ethnobotanical history and culture of Hessen Äpfelwein but extremely superficial stereotypes are what they are.

No, the peanut butter pronunciation aficionados must be suppressed at all costs. It is the only path forward for peace.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

But we're the OG nerds. The ones who read about it online and discussed it in forums before anyone was saying it aloud casually. Pronounce it how you want but I will not stand for this soft-g erasure.

This is not the correct take you heathen

[–] kadaverin0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Never expected to see enlightened centrism show up in the GIF/JIF conflict.

Some speakers pronounce GIF as an initialism rather than an acronym, producing /dʒiː aɪ ɛf/.

Monsters.

Ah shit, here we jo ajain.

[–] Phegan@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (3 children)

It's pronounced however the masses pronounce it. Language is fluid things evolve. If everyone says GIF, it's GIF.

I am going to counter this by pronouncing jpeg as „jay pej“

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 12 points 1 week ago (8 children)

Sorry, but JIF was already taken by a brand of peanutbutter for almost 30 years before the Graphics Interchange Format was created.

Idiots will argue over anything.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 week ago

But without them, you'd be the low-hanging fruit labeled "idiot."

[–] the_q@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 week ago

Let's ask Jod what he thinks.

[–] nathan@piefed.alphapuggle.dev 5 points 1 week ago (2 children)

The fact they have to spell the "correct" way with a J is hilarious to me

Counterpoint: the official pronunciation sounds like "yiff"; so, no thank you.

Probably not the only thing you’re wrong about.
