Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

This has actually happened to me when I took my RV to rural Russia a long, long time ago.

Full story:

Way back before Putin I took my old Mercedes 406 (if you know you know) RV to Russia. We stayed in various places.

At one I noticed that someone had unscrewed, i.e. stolen, the remaining intact brake light plastic cover. Not chasing after us! But it must have happened during the day. Happy to get some precious spare parts, possibly to sell on.

At some point I decided to do some traveling alone, just randomly following backroads, spending the night at a remote place. I chose a village on the map. First hurdle was a rotten wooden bridge, the only way in or out of the village. Barely wide enough for my car, but I made it (I was young and reckless back then). I parked my RV well away from the village on a suitable piece of grassland.
In the middle of the night I heard unmistakable sounds of humans trying to get in (or so I thought). My heart thumping, I gathered all my courage and knowledge of the Russian language and shouted "Кто там?" (who's there). They ran away, but the next morning one of my rearview mirrors was missing.

Bonus:

We drove all the way from Berlin, day and night, to get to a festival way South of St. Petersburg. At last we arrived, but alas the RV was too large to bring it all the way in, it was the middle of the night, we were incredibly tired. I just turned off the road somewhere, onto a meadow taht looked like a suitable place to spend the rest of the night. It was a swamp. The car did not sink deep but there was no way of getting it out.
Fortunately we had some Russians with us and the next morning one of them flagged down a truck driver who pulled us out with one of these (I almost lost a front door, he wasn't gentle):

"IT LOOKS LIKE AUTO REPAIR'S BACK ON THE MENU, BOYS!"

  • Russian people chasing after that dude's RV to strip it for parts

Tbh that was my first thought

Extra psyched when you see it's UPS and not FedEx, cause that means they won't deliver it to a neighbor's porch three blocks away.

I’d still chase down ice cream trucks as an adult, I just want a tasty soft serve!
