It's the meat to skin/bone/exoskeleton ratio. Same reason why we tend to eat chicken and turkeys but not budgies or sparrows.
That makes sense, i don't want to eat shrimp shells and all that. But that makes me wonder, would this be any good to eat?
Slimy yet satisfying.
Wichitty grubs, which can be similar in size to that bug, are great bush tucker.
Taste like peanuts right?
Depends on the wood they’ve been eating!
Very cool! I still wouldn't eat one raw, but I'd try it cooked I think
I learned recently that young cicadas are apparently really good when you cook them.
I can’t eat anything that looks like that, insect or seafood. I don’t even like shrimp!
Americans in the South fry tomato hornworms. Never had them but I hear they taste like tomatoes.
Pro tip: Hunt them at night with a UV flashlight.
Have you been around normal bugs in any amount? Horrible smell.
I prefer to get all my bug intake from low budget flour
Every normal bug I’ve eaten was served with the exoskeleton on by necessity. This produces a lot of sharp crunchy bits, so you get little shards of exoskeleton stuck between your teeth and gums. Also the “meat” of them doesn’t have much bite, like with a cooked shrimp. I’ve only had ants, grasshoppers, mealworms , and silkworm larvae though. Maybe a very large grub with plenty of salt, steamed and then deskeletoned would be tasty. I don’t hold out much hope with my insect experiences thus far though.
They're not bugs they're crustaceans
So are pillbugs, but people don’t seem to be eating those (at least in the US)
How much meat can you get from a pillbug and how does it taste?
Depends on the species, some wood lice are up to 3.8cm in length!
They are edible, apparently, with a flavor similar to shrimp.
People do eat larger isopods, we don't eat pill bugs or silverfish because they're 90% shell by volume and taste bad.
I think people don't like bugs because you can't peel them like you can shrimp or crab.
Thankfully there are not many bugs big enough to peel and eat so it's not really a thing.
They're all arthropods though.
I'd rather eat landbugs than seabugs.
Lake, river, and ocean bugs are also disgusting. Guys, if you don't eat proper meat that doesn't degrade human dignity, then just eat lots of beans with your vegetables like someone who isn't insane.
