I try hard to avoid "common sense". It's a way of saying, "If you don't agree, you're not sensible." Also, it's intentionally vague.

"We need common sense gun laws!"

"Like what exactly"

"..."

Also because it's clearly a misnomer. "common sense" is ironically not that common πŸ™ƒ

[–] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

Common sense is a catch-all for whatever the speaker thinks is obvious. There's really no such thing

[–] MML@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

A revolver in the hand of every youngin you say?

I know this is just thebad.website comic, but I'm genuinely curious (and an idiot) to know what the connection is with generally racist-inclined folk love for saying that everything is common sense. What makes them think in this way?

It's the backbone of their every argument--no matter what it is, if I ask, "Why do you think x, y, or z is the case?"
It is without a doubt their instant reply, 'It's just commonsense!'

Thought-terminating clichΓ©, it’s used to dismiss arguments and shut down critical thinking. It’s a tactic associated with cult language.

Because there isn't a real reason besides idiocy and hate, if they try to rationalize it, it falls apart, they have to face or give away that they're just hateful idiots. Saying it's "common sense" is an easy scapegoat to tidy up the truth, even if it's just for the benefit of their cognitive dissonance.

[–] Zombiepirate@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

It's a way to pretend their opinion is reasonable without having to justify it.

[–] hypnicjerk@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

in addition to the reasons (rationalizations) other commenters have covered, the reason (casuality) that they reuse this particular phrase so much is because it's commonly used in the media they consume. from limbaugh to rogan it's always been a staple.

[–] MotoAsh@piefed.social 5 points 1 week ago

They think that way because that's as far as their thoughts go. They do not have a deeper reason. They're just judgemental morons that jump to conclusions to make themselves feel better.

The "common sense" answer is generally broad and vague. It purposefully avoids nuance and reality. "If I want to build a garage on my property, why does the government need to be involved?" That person doesn't think of the drug dealer doing that to cook meth right next door and possibly blow up the block or the idiot that doesn't understand how to build a structure and it collapses in the first stiff wind.

Sheeesh, and ya all wonder why no one listens to the left.

If you know shit about topic, you can only skim the surface. That's common sense. More police = less crime. More military = less risk of being attacked. More goods = smaller prices. That's common sense.

What it doesn't account for is, for example, too much police = more corruption, too much military = expansionist ideas, too many goods = oversaturation and sharp drop in said goods. Because that requires deeper knowledge. Yes, not much deeper, but you need to know these things are in fact factors, and that the problem is more complex than what's seen at a glance.

Edit: Forgot to answer why it's overused by racists etc. If you know black do most crime out of all, it's common sense to want them pacified. If you know drugs are bad and mexicans are known for cartels, it makes sense to not want mexicans which can be smugglers. It all falls apart as soon as you read on it or do anything, but what these people have most of is willful ignorance.

Depends how u interpret what people say. If someone where to say 13% of the population in the us commit 50% of the crime. Some would interpret that as wow maybe we should target our resources at that 13% to prevent said crime. Then u can have a discussion about if said targeting of resources should be called dei policy or fascist targeting of minorities.

The right would argue "more police = less crime" and the left would argue "something something disadvantage let's not address the crime problem with police cos that's racist or fascist". Common sense would tell us that perhaps cops prevent crime and perhaps targeting those resources at the heigh crime areas would reduce crime. So u tell me what's the common sense solution here?

BTW that stat about 13% is true according to the FBI (yes it was the same under bidden so it's not trump fucking with the stats)

I don't remember where I originally heard it, but I like the sentiment that the problem with common sense is that it's common but not necessarily good.

"common sense" positions are usually ones people haven't thought much about or reasoned themselves into.

There is a quote attributed to Voltaire that says :

Common sense is not so common.

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

For me, it is common sense that arrest quotas are a terrible idea, because one of my great-grandfather was sent to a gulag due to that. For business types, it's just "efficiency".

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago

Common sense, eh? Do you have any idea how stupid the average person is?

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

who knew that knowing you should clean the filter on your dryer made you racist.

I guess I'm a Nazi because I know you should clean the filters on your dishwasher, clothes washer, and HVAC every three months.

πŸ€” something about this sentiment doesn't add up now that I'm thinking about it.

I think the word they forgot is prejudice, not "common sense".

[–] CXORA@aussie.zone 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The point is "common sense" is the justification people gove when they don't have reasons for their beliefs.

I assume and hope you could give 1 good reason for each of those things you do.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

because I want to improve the longevity of my tools as long as possible so that I can starve the corpo-fascists of their lifeblood.

[–] CXORA@aussie.zone 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Ok, good for you. I hope you understood my point, which really didnnot requure a reply from you.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I know you didn't require a reply, but I did anyway. I'll assume you know why, which really didn't require a reply from you either.

[–] phlegmy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

Yeah I'm a little confused by this. It's probably an american thing.
If >50% of your voters pick a racist party, racism must be "common sense" over there.
