THE POLICE PROBLEM

The police problem is that police are policed by the police. Cops are accountable only to other cops, which is no accountability at all.

99.9999% of police brutality, corruption, and misconduct is never investigated, never punished, never makes the news, so it's not on this page.

When cops are caught breaking the law, they're investigated by other cops. Details are kept quiet, the officers' names are withheld from public knowledge, and what info is eventually released is only what police choose to release — often nothing at all.

When police are fired — which is all too rare — they leave with 'law enforcement experience' and can easily find work in another police department nearby. It's called "Wandering Cops."

When police testify under oath, they lie so frequently that cops themselves have a joking term for it: "testilying." Yet it's almost unheard of for police to be punished or prosecuted for perjury.

Cops can and do get away with lawlessness, because cops protect other cops. If they don't, they aren't cops for long.

The legal doctrine of "qualified immunity" renders police officers invulnerable to lawsuits for almost anything they do. In practice, getting past 'qualified immunity' is so unlikely, it makes headlines when it happens.

All this is a path to a police state.

In a free society, police must always be under serious and skeptical public oversight, with non-cops and non-cronies in charge, issuing genuine punishment when warranted.

Police who break the law must be prosecuted like anyone else, promptly fired if guilty, and barred from ever working in law-enforcement again.

    That's the solution.

Our definition of ‘cops’ is broad, and includes prison guards, probation officers, shitty DAs and judges, etc — anyone who has the authority to fuck over people’s lives, with minimal or no oversight.

RULES

Real-life decorum is expected. Please don't say things only a child or a jackass would say in person.

If you're here to support the police, you're trolling. Please exercise your right to remain silent.

Saying ~~cops~~ ANYONE should be killed lowers the IQ in any conversation. They're about killing people; we're not.

Please don't dox or post calls for harassment, vigilantism, tar & feather attacks, etc.

Please also abide by the instance rules.

It you've been banned but don't know why, check the moderator's log. If you feel you didn't deserve it, hey, I'm new at this and maybe you're right. Send a cordial PM, for a second chance.

For just an instant, he stopped being NYPD and simply became a New Yorker and I had a lot of sympathy for him.

Tactically, I am very happy with local law enforcement even the NYPD of all fuckin' agencies beefing with ICE. It's a vital and wonderful step. But yes, it's hilarious in the irony. This dude thought it would always be other people on the receiving end of the injustice, I guess.

He forgot to compare the color chart with what he saw in the mirror... Whoops!

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Not just color, we're well on our way to white on white racism just like the "good ole'" days when America was great (I think, still haven't gotten a solid answer on when that was.)

Leopards ate my face material.

It's not quite that... the NYPD has more than twice as many employees in New York as ICE has nationwide. Police forces in American megacities are sort of equivalent to the whole militaries of some small countries. That's why events like this are a real good thing. This one, at least as much as is shown in this clip, is more the leopard trying to eat the face and getting slapped away.

This is the kind of factor that Gene Sharp means when he says that dictatorships can collapse literally in weeks or days when their support goes away, given the right kind of circumstances.

perfect use of "let them fight"

There's a certain irony to that when NYPD racially profiled people for years and years.

Officer, we are gonna need to stop and frisk you.

Why is that court officer moving to do what they say? They're not his superiors in any way and they're blocking a hallway and shoving people for no good reason. He should be keeping order against the goons disrupting the court.

[–] nucleative@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago

Court officer is used to following the hierarchy and having a little trouble placing these dudes on the org chart.

The NYPD and ICE should have a gunfight! Call for backup and start The Ultimate Showdown of ultimate destiny.

many lives were claimed but eventually,

and getting paid more

[–] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I find ICE significantly worse than police department because at the very least police department's goal is to try to protect the community whereas ICE plans to roll out a fascist regime.

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No doubt that ice is even worse than police.

We just have to make sure that when they fight we aren't in support of either of them.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Not at all. We can certainly support the least evil choice. We just need to recognize that defeating the larger evil is not the final battle

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

just as long as no one sympathises with the cops.

it's a cancer fighting another cancer

[–] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If the police fights ICE then I'm all for it

when they are done they'll go back to fighting civilians.

they aren't the good guys.

let them fight, but root for no one
