UQM Mega Mod is a fan-made remake with optional HD graphics, QoL features, and all kinds of extra goodies. Only possible because the game is open source.

Originally known as Star Control, the series is now known as Free Stars. UQM is SC2, and they released it for free on Steam in anticipation of the release of its long-awaited sequel, which fans backed upwards of 6 figures.

The game is a space adventure game. The dialogue is great, and was the cited source of inspiration for Fallout's dialogue trees. There's also space battles with a couple dozen unique spaceships.

The game inspired things like Mass Effect and Stellaris. So if you enjoyed any of those, give this game a try!
