This seems lopsided, there's no way working in an office is worse than being so broke that a single setback will make you homeless. Unless that's the joke and I'm just dense lol

You don't have to be in an office to have to deal with workplace politics, so the cashier potentially has the worst of both worlds.

You can indeed, but I've done both retail and office work, and dealing with the public is just awful.
