Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

I first played the Demon's Souls remake a couple of years after it had come out. All through the first couple of worlds I ran, I would often notice the same ghost player (based on their appearance) basically in lockstep with me, we seemed to be on the same schedule for when we played and progressing through the game at the same pace.

I've always wondered whether seeing a ghost player in Souls games means that they can also see you at the same time. I hope you can because it was just deeply satisfying to feel like I was in the same game as this stranger from who knows where, a silent companion exploring this deep, dark, dangerous world alongside me.

Iconic, inspiring, no notes

Got invaded in the small sewer tunnel right before gaping dragon while playin with friends. The invader got ganked, 3v1, with boss weapon skills. He then sent me hate messages in Windows for Gaming Live. Not sure what he was expecting, lol.

On a similar note, I was playing through Dark Souls 3 on my PS4 and got invaded in the Grand Archives. I hate PvP but I always try to at leaat give it a go, but that doesn't mean I'm above playing dirty so I used a Seed of a Tree of Giants while I waited for the invader to find me at the entrance. Eventually they did but I was sitting in a corner and as they got closer I rolled forwards and went on the attack. It wasn't clever or pretty but we fought and I beat them, and a few minutes later I got a whiny message calling me cheap and accusing me of "R1 spam", which kept me chuckling all the rest of the day

In a few years time, my girlfriend went from "I haven't played games since NES" to having a platinum in most soulsborn games.

Eldin ring was the first game that was new to both of us, and we did our first play through co-op and had a wonderful time.

Went back and played through the trilogy and Bloodborn. It was my first time going past Yarnim, and the first time I actually got Bloodborn.

The most memorable I think was when we started fresh characters to do the Elden ring DLC.

Invaded in blighttown. Saw the host and two phantoms right below me , near the start. I thought, I'll drop down and get them!

Dropped. Missed. Everyone starts wailing on me. I'm in the black tarkus armor with a halberd. Well fuck it, I want to go down swinging.

Host fell off the edge. Victory for me..

I was in Anor Londo and did one of my firsts invasions. My favourite weapon in DS1 was the Iaito and I invaded one with the same. I used it 2-handed for I wanted to get over the cowering behind my shield and my opponent used it one handed with a shield. The fight took a while as we both refused to go for backstabs and had little damage. The final blow was us both going for the fabulous R2 but mine had more reach and carried me in range only after their hit already was through. I got a nice steam message afterwards and felt quite giddy and happy that me going for 2 handed worked out so will

I invaded into a fight club in Elden Ring. Everyone knows the rules. Wait your turn. No healing unless you win your fight and then you can heal up for the next round. No ganking. Don't attack the host. I waited until I was up and I won my fight. I won another 2 or 3 after that. Then came a guy that didn't respect the rules. He left the fight club area, he healed, he took swings at the host. He had me chase him through the area, the host followed, but didn't attack directly despite the invader being dishonorable. After a long fight, I pulled off the win. The host taunted the dying invader and then I had to peace out because the fight had exhausted all of my resources.

My beloved ER ballista and fireballs. Just engineering silly ways to throw people off of elevated areas. That was my heroin.

My best friend was teaching me about bloodborne. He mentioned a guy was in a tower with a gun. So of course I assume it's a sniper.

Nope. Minigun. We hid behind some cover while my friend laughed at my "oh shit" reaction.

DS3, ashes of ariandel. I’d gotten invaded and brutalized a couple times in/around the bug basement and had no clue where I was supposed to go. Another invader showed up after I’d cleared a lot of the area; not wanting to lose my progress again, I branched into a box and hid for a couple minutes waiting for him to get bored. He sprinted straight past me a couple times before stopping near where I was hiding. I was sick of coward gaming by this point so appeared and approached him. He gestured for me to follow, so I did, since we were in a horrible place for a fight. Instead of going to a good arena, he took me downstairs and pointed at the lever to progress the area, then vanished. The progression from exasperation at the invasion to giddiness as my stupid hiding spot kept working to gratitude as the phantom I thought had come to kill me instead released me from insect purgatory made the encounter of my favorite gaming memories.

Darksouls 1 pvp my friend and i were going through the game together and wed have to 2v1 so many guys trying to invade

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

How often did that happen?

[–] Redacted@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

At least 4-5 times per area, dozens of times in total.

Hundreds of hours of invasions in DS1.

The one that stands out most prominently would be blocking a dragon king great axe special with a greater magic shield enchantment on the side of the staircase to the large anor londo elevator.

Very unique sound effect. I then proceeded to poke the poor guy in the eye with a chaos rapier while he flailed against the unbreakable shield till he fell off.

I used to help random people with bosses in Elden Ring a while back. Ended up helping the same person with Mohg about 10 times one night. They unfortunately died a lot, usually at the end but we often got close. When we finally did it we both jumped up and down and did some emotes. It was nice and wholesome.
