We expect the FBI to conduct a thorough and complete investigation and that the full investigative file will be shared with the appropriate prosecutorial authorities at both the state and federal levels.

Before the Patriot Act US law enforcement agencies were notorious for not wanting to share evidence with other departments.

Seems like Trump might have just restarted that part of police culture.

Oh definitely. He took over where Nixon left off.

“If the president does it, it’s not illegal” and “loyalty to the president above all.”

There’s a reason a lot of Trump’s cronies were Nixon guys (like pre-eminent scumbag Roger Stone).

Yes, but Republicans also were the ones who told Nixon to resign. In hindsight, they probably saw it was too early in the game at the time to try to defend against an impeachment, and painted it as a healing for the nation. Just like Reconstruction, should have burned it all down.

There’s a bunch of interesting context about this too I think. They should have done something. But of course they did nothing.

Republicans told Nixon to resign because they knew the senate would vote to remove him from office. The senate was heavily influenced to remove him for (at least) two reasons.

Unlike today, where all Republicans fall in line, the political parties were in the middle of an ideological “swap.” So some Democrats in the senate were much more conservative than Republicans, making it easier to convict him of obvious unethical activity because it wasn’t staunchly on party lines.
Public perception had a much larger effect then because the news media was somewhat higher quality and less spread out. Right-wing radio hadn’t started yet, which is what eventually spawned Fox News and the entire right-wing news ecosystem. Now it often doesn’t really matter what happens because conservatives also control the media their base consumes.

Then, yep. Gerald Ford fully pardoned his own party member Nixon a month after Nixon resigned under the guise of “healing.” And that was literally it. Nixon spent his days walking on the beach claiming he did nothing wrong.

We have the scene from multiple angles and we know the name of the shooter. There is zero reason for the state to hold off on arresting him and putting together a case.

It's high time Waltz deploys the state Guard to expel ICE. Usually I'd argue the legal ramifications of such an action, I no longer care what is or isn't legal.
