Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. 5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Maher Tarabishi’s family had hoped he could be present to say his final goodbyes to his son, Wael.

Maher, Wael’s primary caretaker, has been in federal detainment since October, separating him from his son as he battled severe health complications from a serious and rare inherited disorder.

But despite the family’s public pleas for Maher’s temporary release, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials denied their request, his attorney said

Seems pretty clear to me that my country is no longer a beacon of freedom or justice. 2nd amendment resolutions are starting to look necessary.

We will know in November... Or earlier if elections are canceled as I expect.

Never has been.

Or even "family values" for that matter. How the hell can you claim to be focused on families while doing shit like this.

The son had only known his father as his care taker for his entire life. The administration who claims they're locking up "the worst of the worst," had to detain a father (during what he thought would be another normal immigration check in just like he had been complying with for the past 20+ years) who had devoted himself to caring for his son.

The son's condition began to decline almost as soon as his father was detained because nobody else really understood how to care for him. His dying wish was to see his father one last time, and not only did the family first administration deny him that wish, they wouldn't even allow the father to be temporarily released to attend his funeral.

This country has never been a beacon of freedom and justice unless you are white.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 16 points 1 week ago

It was built on the graves of those promised freedom and justice.

Clovis people represent.

Given the current 'success' of protests against Trump Inc. I highly doubt there will be a point in the near future were enough Americans can be mobilized to actually achieve something even if the elections are skipped... they'll come for the active opposition leads (identifiable by the stock pile of data they process) first framing them as terrorists. The remains will have to wait till this admin as inevitably turned the whole country so shitty a majority is actually ready to leave their comfort zone.

Currently protest are as effective as 'strongly worded letters' as both rely on the addressee to actually give a fuck about the sender.

I know I'm being pessimistic here, and God knows I hope I'm wrong... but the last few months, watching the “land of the free, home of the brave” turn into a hyper-corrupt dictatorship without any significant resistance, have made me very sober.

Freedom is something that is rarely thought about, but it's deeply missed as soon as it's gone, and by then it's too late.

[–] GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (5 children)

Dude.

You dumb cunts elected Trump twice.

Your country hasn't been a beacon of freedom for nearly ten years.

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 33 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I doubt most people on Lemmy voted for Trump. I certainly didn’t. I believe the dumb cunts you are looking for are over on X.

[–] GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The majority of Americans saw the first Trump run and thought "that shit was alright"

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

1/3. And then 1/3 thought it didn’t matter and didn’t vote or for whatever reason could not vote, some combination thereof.

[–] GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

So the majority.

A non-vote is still a vote.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

the non voters felt it would somehow be good for palestine if kamala did not get in or that somehow if things were bad enough in the us the populace would have more empathy with them. Instead of what happened which is the populace has less pull to do anything about it and many like myself that now don't see doing anything on the global stage till we right our own house (which is more than just trump as we have to get rid of all the millenium and before laws that weakened civil rights)

[–] Joelk111@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yes, me, the dumb cunt that has voted in every election for progressive leaders. My apologies to my fellow Americans for electing Trump.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 1 points 1 week ago (16 children)

With the way our election system works, not voting for Harris was the same as voting for Trump.

[–] Joelk111@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Well, I guess I should've said I voted as progressive as possible within the confines of our election system. Doesn't roll off the tongue quite as well haha.

Ranked choice elections are, like, right there. Frustrating that we can't have them.

A third voted for him. One third. Another third didn’t like either choice and didn’t vote. The final third bit the bullet and voted for Harris.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 8 points 1 week ago

And a bunch of the votes in the first third are suspect. I mean, Trump admitted multiple times on camera that they were rigged

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

this is pretty much the way I see it as well. obviously not exactly. Half of the third who voted for him are complete idiots (I thought he would only go after cirminals types)

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 1 points 1 week ago

A good chunk of that third are black and latino voters. That fact alone is fuckin’ wild to me.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

its funny because I was working with this british guy and when brexit happened I was like ha ha and then we voted in trump and he was like ha ha but I was like. Well that at least will only last four years. I so wish this was just a funny thing.

[–] ThirdConsul@lemmy.zip 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Now you're a bacon of just ice.

I'll see myself out.

[–] MasterBlaster@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Thank you - you gave me a chuckle!

[–] SayJess@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago

Don’t worry, they’ll come for the guns…just not their guns.

[–] zr0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 46 points 1 week ago

That’s one of the most heartbreaking things I have read in ages. Fuck this.

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago

That kind of treatment builds a really un treatable pain and hate.

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Companies shut down for employing illegal workers repeatedly and even employing children?

Zero.

(we wouldn't want our chicken baron to make only 10 billion a year, would we? He can't afford any more cuts! Did you know he only owns six cars and ONE raggedy old 2022 jet and some yachts? Did you know his house staff is now less than a DOZEN people to take care of him and his needs like making snacks and cleaning up his pee and stuff? He just pees on the floor so what)

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

obama gets a lot of flak but he actually put more emphasis on going after employers.

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Really? I never heard of him shutting down anybody, but I haven't read absolutely everything on Earth, maybe I missed it.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

nah just fines as far as I know but at least he was targeting the right part.

[–] WesternInfidels@feddit.online 6 points 1 week ago

It's the Culture of Life(TM)

[–] Iamcanadian@piefed.ca 4 points 1 week ago

Very sad. 😔

I guess he does not look aryan enough :(

[–] Tuscy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It’s fucked up but I thought I read somewhere his son had died because he was detained.

Not sure though. Don’t quote me on it.
