It's probably better than we could have reasonably hoped for with this court, but a 4/4 split that doesn't create any nationwide precedent to enforce the super unambiguous "shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" language in the first amendment is still pretty bad. We dodged a bullet but the gun is still loaded.

Because the Supreme Court divided evenly, its decision is not a binding precedent nationwide and sets the stage for the entire court to reconsider the issue in a future case, perhaps from another state.

Good that people are doing that, but I don't think that excuses Sig. Like, if Nerf sold a gun that discharged accidentally they'd probably eat a product liability lawsuit over it, I don't know why a firearms manufacturer should get a pass.

Oof, geeze, this article was my first exposure to this issue and I hadn't considered this, but between a for profit business lying to avoid product liability lawsuits (which they probably wouldn't face anyway because court decisions have made them basically immune) and police officers lying to avoid being held accountable for their actions (which they probably wouldn't face anyway because etc.) I could believe either scenario. Honestly it's probably both at the same time.

e; Sometimes I start a comment and forget where when I come back to it

An Iowa sheriff is warning that his county may be publicly shamed by the Trump administration for insufficiently backing the president’s immigration agenda, though he says he is “more than happy” to help. He said he just wants to ensure he doesn’t end up with too few officers, jail beds and dollars to respond to the county’s needs.

Dubuque County Sheriff Joe Kennedy, who serves nearly 100,000 people in the area bordering Wisconsin and Illinois, seemed to try not to alienate the federal government when he declined to participate in a program that would commit county revenue and jail space to immigration enforcement. He explained his decision before a packed county chamber this week, drawing mixed reactions.

...

“It has generally been my experience that when we partner with larger entities (Federal, state), those agencies usually ‘take’ more than they ‘give.’ Essentially, we usually end up with the short end of the stick in some way,” he wrote.

Kennedy said he would be “more than happy to assist your agents in our area” but asked ICE not to rely on his 181-bed jail because he doesn’t have room.

David Bindert, an official in ICE’s Cedar Rapids, Iowa, office, was sympathetic in his brief response: “No worries Sir, I completely understand, and I thank you for your time in this matter.”

An Iowa law prohibits state and local officials from adopting policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Attorney General Brenna Bird recently sued the Winneshiek County sheriff over a Facebook post that she said discouraged cooperation, potentially jeopardizing state funding to the county.

The Trump administration has also taken legal action against governments with policies limiting immigration arrests, suing Chicago, Denver and Rochester, New York.

Wendy Ortiz was surprised to find out she was being fined by U.S. immigration authorities for being in the country illegally — but it was the amount that truly shocked her: $1.8 million.

Ortiz, 32, who earns $13 an hour in her job at a meatpacking plant in Pennsylvania, has lived in the United States for a decade, after fleeing El Salvador to escape a violent ex-partner and gang threats, she said in an interview and in immigration paperwork. Her salary barely covers rent and expenses for her autistic 6-year-old U.S.-citizen son.

...

The Trump administration plan, details of which were first reported by Reuters in April, include levying fines of $998 per day for migrants who failed to leave the U.S. after a deportation order.

The administration planned to issue fines retroactively for up to five years, Reuters reported. Under that framework, the maximum would be $1.8 million. The government would then consider seizing the property of immigrants who could not pay.

It remains unclear exactly how the Trump administration would collect the fines and seize property.

They've been winning it for a long time because multiple governments around the world have outlawed dissent in a lot of different ways. This event isn't going to change anybody's opinions on the underlying conflict it's just going to make everyone dig in deeper.

There's a huge difference between an article being mass downvoted by salty users who don't want to face an unpleasant truth and an article being removed by salty moderators who won't let their users even be passingly exposed to that truth. I've experienced that first one on .world but I haven't ever had a problem with the second yet.

I don't think that's quite the whole story when supposedly Muslim governments like Saudi Arabia and Qatar have been doing so much to help the US and Israel recently. Powerful people bully less powerful people and try to use whatever the local religion is to justify themselves after the fact.

Being on the left means people don't have to be just like you for you to care about them

Yeah, age isn't so much the issue when we have decent older people like Bernie Sanders and younger douchebags like Josh Gottheimer running around, the problem is that newly elected Democratic party members have all been told that they need to vote for the people who have been in DC the longest and one day eventually it will be their turn

That would be bad enough on its own, but coupled with the destruction of any kind of campaign finance regulations making it a lot easier for moderate Democratic party members to secretly work work with rich donors and Republicans to make sure progressives don't stay in DC for long, we've ended up with a senior group of Democratic lawmakers who have shitty policies their voters hate and only know how to solve their problems through hippie punching

Another one of the dumbest things - we already paid Boeing to build a new Air Force One from scratch a few years ago, so this Qatari bribe is a totally redundant waste of money
