This is beautiful, I think I recognize the cellular automaton he built with the rocks, it might be rule 110 or an equivalent one.

I guess this is not the point of the comic but would this "thinking and deducting math" be a solution to not go insane from brain atrophy during solitary confinement?

Theoretically, with enough random debris you could do lambda calculus, so by extension you could create fully functional programs to entertain yourself.
