Ahead of local elections that serve as a bellwether for next year’s presidential campaign, the National Rally says it is the victim of an increasingly radical left wing.

France’s far right is framing the death of an activist associated with far-right groups as a moment akin to the murder of Charlie Kirk in the United States.

The National Rally has in recent days started pointing to the killing of 23-year-old Quentin Deranque in Lyon as proof the poll-topping populist party is the victim of an increasingly radical political left, much as the MAGA movement in the United States did following Kirk’s assassination last year.

With key municipal elections next month serving as a bellwether of the National Rally’s electability heading into the 2027 presidential race, the incident has deepened the fissures in France’s polarized politics and fueled fears of further violence.

Has anyone defaced their shitty memorial posters yet? Is the idiot in a grave yet, and if so, where is it? I have a full bladder.

So Politico, you are going to completely glanced of the fact that a fascist gang started the fight that resulted in this death? Par for the course.

The events leading up to the fight that cost Deranque his life remain unclear

No, Politico, the video evidence is pretty clear.

[–] kescusay@lemmy.world 34 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I don't see how this could even be in question. The sequence of events in the video is absolutely plain as day. Nazis picked a fight and got their heads kicked in for it, case fucking closed.

He's never gonna be their Charlie Kirk, as if that would even be something to aspire to.

Thanks for the short summary. So pretty much exactly what I imagined happened after hearing a far right person got "attacked by the left and killed". But it's always interesting to then see which media you can trust and who tries to push an agenda.

Can you share a link to the video, or an article that explains what happened?

[–] kescusay@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I won't link directly to the video, because it does show an extremely violent brawl (and a man's final conscious moments; to be clear, I'm not celebrating his death and never would). But the Wikipedia article on it links to news sites and analysis, and several of those have the video.

It's not celebration to observe that, if you attack other people, it might not turn out the way you expect it will, and any adverse consequences resulting from someone defending themselves are the responsibility of the aggressor.

Do we have a ink to this video?

[–] deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 day ago

Especially as it's probably newsworthy that they weren't murdered by an even more far right person because they weren't far right enough.

[–] Akh@lemmy.world 41 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Far right picks a fight, gets killed, shocked pikachu face

[–] fonix232@fedia.io 17 points 2 days ago

Blames it on nonexistent "far left" in an attempt to push the general Overton window to the right even more

Look up Horst Wessel

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horst_Wessel

The tl, dr is that Horst was a sleazy character who joined the Nazis because he liked being a bully. After a beef with his landlady he got killed by some locals she'd brought to protect herself.

After his death, Horst became a symbol of the Nazi Party and the song commemorating his death became a standard at Nazi events and marches.

Ugh, the US going to the "we are Charlie Kirk" song, aren't they.

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

My favorite Kirk quote is when he blithely said that school shootings were the price America had to pay for freedom. I am glad that he got a chance to die for something he believed in.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago

Even if it wasn't for something he believed in, that's fine too.

I think the majority of the world would agree that the best fascist is a decomposing one.

One that's weeping as he bleeds out is a close second.

Meloni is very nervous in Italy, they could see the return of the Red Brigades, famous for kidnapping billionaires and shooting them in the kneecaps. Big comeback in Italy.

In 1978 they kidnapped the Italian PM, Aldo Moro, put him on trial and killed him. This greatly affected how the blackshirts in Italy treated social programs afterward.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Note that Aldo Moro was famously corrupt and enjoyed impunity from the formal legal system.

[–] cv_octavio@piefed.ca 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Why not try to use a martyr with some charisma. I mean I know we do not get to pick, but....oh right. I forgot, the problem here is the cause they stand for is deplorable so that probably reduces the amount of attractive candidates for martyrdom.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

The best thing that could happen is that they all performed acts of self-martyrdom.

[–] Carvex@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago

Why won’t people with empathy tolerate our literal Nazi beliefs?!

[–] hector@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago

And of course the mainstream parties are using it to suppress the left and make them look violent.

That said, France unbowed is doing a shit job that they aren't the popular reform option, they need new leadership, it shouldn't be a contest, they should be winning against the far right fake populists misdirecting anger towards scapegoats, not running behind them.

But the Macron's and their ilk will relish this, and we can tell, calling them "far left" we can see their qualities. They will throw the country into the arms of fascists that will fix elections with the help of the US, unless France Unbowed gets it's shit together, and runs some economic populism and runs the table. There is no excuse for them not to either. If they can't do it they need a different party to, and now.

[–] Josey_Wales@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago

Anyone have a link to the full video of the fight? All I am finding are the clips of the kickbto the head when he is on the ground.

[–] thlibos@thelemmy.club 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Nothing's stopping them from throwing ol' Quentin a pro wrestling style funeral.
