I have an LG smart TV. I got an Apple TV so I could watch my Apple media and I absolutely love it. I have had it for several years and it's still going strong. Definitely be worth picking up. I'd possibly wait till Black Friday though because it'll probably go on sale.

Apple TV is far better than any of those built in tv software

I love my 3rd gen Apple TV that my husband got me for my birthday. Best streaming device I've ever used.

It's fast, easy to use and just works. My favorite thing is the continue watching, it knows all my shows I watch. It's so cool.

Happy streaming 😀

I would definitely recommend getting the AppleTV 4k.

Most of my family uses the Amazon fire sticks and it’s great for them.

But I’ve literally blown thru 2-3 different fire sticks myself.

I have a high end 4K Samsung TV and the TVOS isn’t the fastest, but it does the job if you don’t want to spend money. It’s only good for when my girlfriend wants to stream something from her phone to the TV since she has an Android Phone.

But having the latest AppleTV 4K has been absolutely amazing! It turns on just as fast if not faster then my actual TV.

It’s also great because you can download Games & Apps from the AppStore. Especially if you pay for an Apple One Subscription/Apple Arcade subscription. (And if you do I’d highly recommend investing in a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Controller.) Since most games do need an actual controller to play.

And having an iPhone & Mac I love being able to Airplay/Cast my phone screen or Mac to the TV so I can actually see things bigger and see how it will come out if I making a presentation or something.

Then when I also love being able to play games that are on my phone that aren’t available on AppleTV yet like Monopoly or some other games.

And last but certainly not least, having your AppleTV to connect and control your HomeKit Smart devices. It’s great to have especially since a storm just knocked out my old HomePod. And it’s nice to know that even tho my HomePod broke, my AppleTV still acts as the new main Device or backup.

Plus you can also SideLoad Apps to your AppleTV. Like I have a Movie/TV Streamer Application. And I also have an Emulator Application that has multiple emulators that I can play old games with.

So there’s definitely a lot of great advantages to having an AppleTV.

Is it worth it to you is the real question and what you’re main purposes of using it for?

And since you do have a 4K TV like myself I’d recommend getting the 4K High Speed HDMI cable (It’s like $10 at the very most) so you can actually get the Maximum Image Quality and Speed.

Because in the Settings there’s a setting called Chroma and if you just have a normal old HDMI cable you will still get High-Quality picture that is compatible with most TV’s and HDMI Cables. With the 4:2:0 setting.

But if you have the higher speed HDMI Cable you can set it to the 4:2:2 Chroma setting and it will improve clarity, but does require the High Speed Cable.

Hope this helps with any questions you might have had!

Yes! I have exactly that setup.

[–] Ok_Plate_6961@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yes. Dolby vision is by default on for everything and it looks amazing

I have a C9, and I an ATV 4K. I prefer it. Links to all things Mac in my home which is a lot, and my wife prefers the remote. The LG software isn't bad, even all these years later. It does Dolby Atmos which is nice.

I'd only recommend it if you really want an Apple TV. LG's software is good enough for the majority of things. The ATV is just a bonus if you want that added AirPlay functions plus ATV ecosystem.

I have the same C2 TV and except for when I first got it and set it up in the spring, I haven't seen the built-in apps. Actually, I did try a built in app the other day to rule out a problem with my HDMI cable and Apple TV, but it turned out to be the latest LG firmware.

For me, not only is the Apple TV fast and has great video processing, it's also clean, ad free, easy to navigate, and just a better experience than built in apps, including LG's WebOS.

In addition to all that above, I like the way it works seamlessly with my other apple products, whether it's my AirPods, my phone, or iPad. It also has far less tracking which means more privacy.

Things are better these days, but devices with the biggest user base also get more ap updates for a much longer period of time than individual brands of TV's, or even model lines within some brands when new ones come out.

How many people have actually used webOS on an LG C2? It is pretty fast, and you don’t have to worry about audio sync. The only let down is Apple Channels on the Apple TV app. But that seems to be an Apple thing. I can navigate quickly from YouTube to Netflix to the Apple TV app in a matter of seconds.

LG oled TV’s are exceptional we have 4 of them love them to death great quality and everything

[–] PDKiwi@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have a new 4K Sony Bravia and I mostly use the apps on it including the ATV app however my ATV does much more than the Sony can. Eg. Run Infuse off my iMac.

[–] Professional-Ad9901@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

IMO it’s always worth buying a Apple TV 4K, great device, super fast, seamless UI, no ads and great picture quality in apps, people suggesting using built in TV apps clearly have never used an ATV 4K box. If op is tied into the Apple ecosystem it’s a no brainer.

I have a 65” LG C2 and an AppleTV, and if my AppleTV died I would buy another before I considered interacting with WebOS. It’s a beautiful screen, but a shit interface.

[–] Patient_Science_8648@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have the exact same setup and agree. I tried the LG one and ATV is better hands down.

Apple tv hardware is far better than any tv internal antenna processor etc

[–] rdclark2@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Same TV we have. Still prefer our AppleTV 4k (1st gen) even though the LG’s streaming functionality is quite adequate in most regards. The ATV tends to get the latest versions of most streaming apps sooner, with maximum functionality (UHD content, Dolby Vision, Atmos, etc.). Its interface is still snappier, less cluttered, and devoid of advertising. And oh, those screen savers! All that said, I think I could live with the LG’s WebOS alone if I had to. It’s reasonably OK.

I have a C2 and an Apple TV 4K. Apple TV is better, easier to use and faster than the software in the TV. However, and this only applies in UK, the BBC iPlayer app is much better on the C2 (has UHD/4K support and the standard UI) and integration of Freeview Play (SD/HD TV through aerial - DVB-T2) with the C2 apps for the main channels is pretty slick (e.g., if watching a BBC broadcast a prompt tells you if the programme is available in UHD on iPlayer and loads the app and starts the programme with one button press).

[–] symonty@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Biggest issue for any "smart" tv is long term support and crap apps.

I have 3 smart TVs , 2 of them no longer get apps nor updates.

I have appleTVs on all my TVs, just works.

[–] lozcozard@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I've been saying this for years. Get a lower cost replaceable device not a £1000 TV which will be EOL in a few years.

Trouble is, most (all?) TVs are smart. I just don't bother with their rubbish built in software and use AppleTV.

[–] flamiatos@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (3 children)

No. If you don't use Apple home devices and Apple services like facetime.

[–] sperry1970@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Why not I only have an iPad and Apple TV. It’s a more expensive streaming device but it’s fast and has good support.

[–] lozcozard@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This doesn't make sense and is wrong.

[–] RedHawk417@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

AppleTV is one of, if not, the most powerful streaming device on the market right now. You don’t need to use FaceTime or Apple Home for it to be beneficial.

Absolutely.

[–] philfnyc@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have an LG CX, and it works well with the ATV 4K. I watch thru the ATV most times. Occasionally, I will watch an OTA program using an antenna (rabbit ears) directly from the CX. With HDMI eARC, I can play the TV audio thru my ATV and into my HomePods 2 pair.

[–] deinarastas@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yes. if you are dedicated to the Apple infrastructure, it is absolutely worth it.

[–] sean_themighty@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

You definitely get the most out of it if you’re already in the ecosystem, but it’s still far better than any smarttv OS even if it’s the only Apple device you own. It’s also probably the best value Apple device there is.

[–] zlandar@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Only if there is a streaming app you need that is not available on LG.

C2 is relatively new and it has a much better processor than a typical low-end TV.

You are not going to notice any difference in visual quality or response with an Apple TV.

I have the latest Apple TV 2022 on a C9. I use it for HomeKit and to watch a few streaming apps that are not on LG.

[–] PrimalInstinct7@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have a C2 and I recently got the Apple TV 4K 2022. I’m happy for many things but also found that a few things are actually quite frustrating. Pros: 1. Speed of the device, navigating between different apps is so fast. 2. Better picture quality and HDR for all apps other than Netflix. 3. Dolby Atmos for Apple Music 4. Far better surround and Atmos output for all apps (when it works properly). Cons: 1. Netflix app is just outdated as compared to C2’s in built app and picture of quality of many titles (such as Suits) is just outright bad. 2. Just can’t get to have my Samsung Q990C soundbar system to work properly with ATV. It’s extremely buggy and on so many titles (on all apps) the center channel gets output to the rear right channel. It was extremely frustrating to have it to work properly. The only solution I found for this was to plug ATV directly into the soundbar instead of using earc to send sound from the C2 to the soundbar but even this has resulted in a few minor hiccups. Hope this helps…

[–] 5uspect@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’ve an Apple TV with my C1, I’ll never use the LG software.

[–] Blog_Pope@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Even if it was as fast and well organized as AppleTV (they aren’t), I would still buy it because privacy tracking and ads. The reason you can’t buy dumb TV’s anymore is because they make money selling you, your data and pitching ads.

Every TV in the house gets an AppleTV, my newest is 3 years old, the oldest is like 8 (gen4).

[–] UltraSPARC@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yes a thousand times yes. I find Apple has more 4K HDR movies than what you find on competing platforms and it supports frame rate matching. Plus Apple is always first to support new AV standards.

[–] Fionn_MacCuill@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yes 👍 or an nvidia shield. Both are fantastic options

[–] Matthew9559@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I prefer the Apple TV interface and the consistency across my tv’s so I always hook one up. Great devices and the app support is really good.

[–] Ausborn_1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have this exact set up. It works great. A word of caution if you will want Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision, a high-quality HDMI cable from your Apple TV to your LG C2 65 inch OLED TV is mandatory. Your grandma’s HDMI cable or the one that’s been in the junk drawer for the last 10 years will not be good enough. Nor will the cheap “8K” cables from Amazon — been there, done that. Good luck.
