Qobuzโs shop has a fantastic catalog of nearly all the music I want. A whole lot more than Bandcamp. Highly recommend checking it out if youโre building your music library!

I found that Victorinox (makers of the swiss army knife) do an equivalent to the leatherman multi tool. The "swiss tool X".
Not so much buying as getting rid of the American tech, I switched from Windows to Linux!
My Fairphone is on its way and should arrive today. Replacing my semi-broken Samsung Galaxy Flip 4. Let's see how it goes!
i am currently using my new fairphone and loving it.
I've bought one for my kid so far, the only problem I see is weak 4 (works, but does not show caller id) or no 5G support in Slovenia. Something that shouldn't be hard to fix, but ๐คท
Fairphone 6 or an earlier model? That's surprising if the 6 doesn't work with Slovenia's 5g network, as it supports all the necessary bands.
- I think it has to do with configuring for providers (even Pixels didn't work initially, only after a while with an update). Edit: Note that the situation could have changed since I've last checked - I'll ask him what's the status now.
im using a fairphone with /e/os on it. way better than expected :3 (if u use the /e/os version, install lawnchair instead of the default launcher. thank me later)
Or Niagara Launcher. Is this possible? Its awesome.
Considering getting a fairphone. I do like my pixel but I want out of big tech and US companies
You could keep the Pixel - you've already bought it, so that money has already found its way into Google's coffers. If it works for you, you could flash a degoogled custom ROM, such as GrapheneOS, /e/OS or iodรฉOS. Pixels are excellent for this.
Dumb question, but Samsung is Korean, not American, no?
Yes, but this remains the BuyEuropean comm, not the BoycotAmerica comm
Yes, it is. Not boycotting South Korea or anything, but it's still nice to buy something European instead. Also my experience with Samsung was pretty mixed.
Fair point.
My self hosting journey. Gonna cancel my google account.. Any day now
Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.
If you have a google account because it contains email history but it sits dormant, logged out, not using google products for years, then it isn't supporting them with data.
They won't delete your data anyway or your fingerprint link or tracking data if you delete your account, might as well also have access to it if needed.
Thanks for the advice. Yeah I probably need ti keep the mail a good while in case I miss changing the mail on some service.
Depending on what you need from Google, you mind find a temporary solution somewhere else like https://sync.com/
Seems nice. Already setup immich and nextcloud. I have my own domain with email. So it's just the hassle with changing every login etc tonthe new mail.
I'm self hosting as well, and using the free version of Tailscale to access.
Moving from Gilette to a safety razor has been so good. Feel like a big boy now when I shave. (Mootes (Swiss) for the razor and Tiger (Chech)for blades. 100 blades are about 20 bugs & 1 blade is 1 weeks worth of shaving. So it's almost 2 years of shaving for 20 bugs. With Gillette Fussion I paid about 35 bugs for 8 blades. 1 blade would last me about 1 month. So 35 bugs for 8 months... way more expensive and American).
Than I recently started buying European clothing brands (that manufacture in Europe). I specially love Nikin. They are a Swiss Brand and produce in Portugal abd they plant 1 tree for each piece you get from them. They are pricy. But I was moving away from cheaper clothes anyway and getting more and more pieces that last long & I have to think 2 before buying.
Persuaded a friend to go with pocketbook instead of kindle.
Also recently got fairbuds.
Switched from audible to libro.fm and Thalia.de . Yes libro is still US but you can select a local book shop that gets a share of your subscription. The crazy part is, in both cases you actually download mp3 or even m4b files that you can save on YOUR system.
If you are willing to selfhost, you should look into audiobookshelf. Abs is a streaming server for audiobooks. It for example allows multiple people to use the same library and have their individual listening progress saved. And you can actually stream your books and don't have to download them if you don't want to.
In short: it's a much nicer listening experience than audible ever was, especially if you shared your account with someone else.
https://www.audiobookshelf.org/
And you can use https://audible-tools.kamsker.at/ to free your existing audible library from the clutches of Amazon
Since Thalia tried to squeeze small bookstores out of business and other unfair behaviour I'm boycotting them. See https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thalia_B%C3%BCcher To be fair, there are probably not many alternatives to audio books.
I recently moved into a new apartment that includes a kitchen. All of the appliances are from Amica which is a Polish company
After a tip from this comm, I bought Mustang shoes. Designed in Germany, made in Portugal, shipped with Zalando. Will buy more of their shoes for both summer and winter!
Wanted a watch to measure my sport sessions. I was going to get a garmin, but someone here recommended me a Polar and I can't be happier with the purchase
I replaced my Garmin Instinct with a Polar Grit X2, really happy with it!
I discovered how much I like L'Orรฉal men products, especially the barber Shower Gel and Deodorant. Used to only use old spice before.
The Kaufland brand energy drinks are much cheaper and just as tasty as Monster (I like the apple one the best).
Ripped all bluey and spidey episodes (OBS FTW) and canceled Disney plus.
Bought a used electric BMW instead of a Tesla for my wife.
Switched from coca cola and soda stream to supermarket brand siroups and sodapop.
Chio or supermarket brand instead of lays and Pringles.
Still some work to do:
- Google One (3 eur a month) for Gmail and photos storage, testing immich for the last few months
- YouTube Premium for the family (24 eur a month), no substitute in sight
- Samsung Phones, no substitute in sight
- MacBook from work, no good alternatives
YouTube Premium for the family (24 eur a month), no substitute in sight
Not saying this will be a no effort switch, but imo the best substitute in sight would be the open seas. There is tons of ways to get the benefits of premium, without giving money to google. But it is a lot easier for a single adult to figure this out than it is for a whole family so no judgement and seeing you did so as a solution to Disney+ i know i'm not telling you about novel idea, but still wanted to write not paying for the original is sometimes more possible than paying for an alternative.
Yeah, it's a mix of kids use, daily changing content, and consumption on the TV. Hard to get an adblock working and too much work to yt-dlp all the videos I watch everyday, plus I'd like to still compensate the creators somehow. It's a complex one.
Hard to get an adblock working
Nowadays it really isn't. You install an app like you install the YouTube app, whether it be on Android TV or Android phone. Same for Windows and Linux, you install another app like you've done countless times before.
Depending on what you need from Google, you mind find a temporary solution somewhere else like https://sync.com/
I started to realise how much furniture is still manufactured in Europe, when you start to look for quality and not simply for the cheapest product available. My personal favourite has to be Mรผller Small Living. After our move we ditched our old and broken bed for a new one and got one of their folding work stations for working from home. Both are amazing, both in terms of design and quality of the furniture. They are all made in Germany as well.
Setup a Hetzner Storage Share (NextCloud) instance to migrate from Google calendar and drive
Puma and Le Coq Sportif instead of New Balance.
Replaced my Gillette razor with Boldking. Migrated my Bluesky account to a Eurosky PDS.
Can you define "win"?
