A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Winrar never made me go crazy and kill myself

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 40 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Fewer people have been driven to suicide by WinRar

[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 6 points 6 hours ago

Not sure if the same applies to WinZip though.

To be honest I am more profitable than OpenAI. My salary covers my expanses and I still have some money left at the end of the month. Can Sam Altman say the same about OpenAI?

[–] King_Bob_IV@startrek.website 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Sam's Altman can definitely say that his salary covers his expenses and that he has money left over at the end of the month. Open AI has been very profitable for him. It's just not profitable as a company.

[–] omarthemediocre@lemmy.zip 1 points 30 minutes ago

Yeah, Sam is fine, he has always been good at grifting ever since he sold that useless app of tracking friends

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 2 points 5 hours ago

He's getting paid in exposure.

Can you also hallucinate bad advice for free, or is that a subscription service?

[–] GalacticSushi@piefed.blahaj.zone 5 points 8 hours ago (3 children)

It's free, but I might start including ads in my hallucinations soon

[–] conartistpanda@lemmy.world 1 points 23 minutes ago

How about ads to get you to NOT buy something, like advertising a FOSS app.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 hours ago

I can't wait for it to start hallucinating ads

[–] Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz 1 points 8 hours ago

Totally understandable. You gotta keep up with the enshittification.

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 6 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

The time I put some money to see how options worked and lost it all was more profitable than OpenAI. I only lost some $300.

[–] EnsignWashout@startrek.website 1 points 17 minutes ago* (last edited 15 minutes ago)

I considered sharing my own choices that led to lost money, while still more profitable than OpenAI...but there are just too many.

Edit: Here's one - that time Homer Simpson bought a mint condition copy of Amazing Fantasy #15, and then ate it - was still more profitable than OpenAI.

[–] xyguy@startrek.website 27 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Well maybe OpenAI has only made 0 dollars now. But, give it a few years and its sure to make at least $000,000,000,000.00.

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Maybe if you put a minus in front of that!

David Caruso face, and jabs sunglasses arm into tear duct

I really love desktop applications. They do their job, you install it and it's done. And you can work towards next version and such while people can decide to not upgrade.

Now everything is cloud, they only maintain one version, they can change it whenever, you can't get any say, and have to always agree on their policies. And have Internet connection.

If I could make money making desktop applications, I would love that job. Everything is web and AI now

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 hours ago

Honestly I like well built web apps better. They are install once, use anytime anywhere.

The main thing though being that it's self hosted, self managed. Fuck the "service providers" that will try to steal your first born of they can

[–] lemmyng@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Everything is cloud = everything is someone else's computer

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 2 points 5 hours ago

...means everything is subscription

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 49 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

That isn't a fair comparison. Winrar has been here for decades, while OpenAI is relative new. Give OpenAI 2 decades of time and we can then see it loss 5 trillion dollar.

[–] hayvan@piefed.world 55 points 15 hours ago

That isn't a fair comparison, WinRAR actually provides value to its users.

[–] redlemace@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Did they ever found that guy that bought that WinRAR license? It's one of a kind and must be worth a lot more now.

[–] ReluctantMuskrat@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (1 children)

I'm that guy, or i was like 25 years ago!

[–] charonn0@startrek.website 1 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

I am also that guy, and it was more like 17 years ago.

[–] redlemace@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

Dang! Two exist! That lowers the value, still significant more than a trump nft

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 4 points 11 hours ago

The Metaverse ~~is~~ was more profitable than OpenAI. Pets.com was more profitable than OpenAI.

[–] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Not only more profitable, but more valuable as well. Not that it's particularly valuable.

[–] lost_faith@lemmy.ca 2 points 8 hours ago

Perhaps you meant useful

[–] LordDaveTheKind@piefed.social 9 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

WinRAR sells a successful and effective product to companies. AFAIK, their main business is B2B.

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz -3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

What do they sell? WinRaR is not a good application

[–] LordDaveTheKind@piefed.social 4 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I can name 2 o 3 corpos (big ones) who regularly renew their WinRAR license. And that repays it abundantly.

[–] thevoidzero@lemmy.world 6 points 10 hours ago

This is how I want things to work. Big Commercial use needs to pay, everyone else get for free, and open source.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I really wonder how many people pay for LLMs. I used to have my company pay for one product but that was company money. hard for me to believe I would've ever spent my own money on that. Unless it was $20 a year instead of $100, I guess then maybe I would have. I think the fact that every tech company is cramming LLMs for free into every product is a sign that most people wouldn't pay for them.

[–] Fishnoodle@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

Yeah, I also wonder who's actually willing to pay for this shit. Even with ai generated 'art' unless you need large volumes, it's probably cheaper to just go on fiver and hire a real artist to make something for you

[–] wildcardology@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

WinRAR = 1$

OpenAI = 0$

[–] redlemace@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

AI: here are some numbers you asked me for. 7 , 554, 90871, 3.1425, 276, -4, 1155. If you tell how you gonna use them I can make a preformatted document. Do you want me to make a year staterment of your bookkeeping? Or name a country and i provide a random phone number from there.
